Great if you're not a native

Portland used to be a great city in all its aspects. It is just the right size, not too big as to get lost in it, but not so small that you run into people you know randomly every day. Housing costs used to be fairly decent, schools were great, etc. I have lived in Portland since 1989 so this is not the opinion of someone fresh to the area. The big thing I have noticed in the past 5 or so years is that more and more peoploe are moving here from California, Montana, Texas, and just about every other state. I encourage change, but unfortunatly these non-native transplants have driven housing costs up, taken away a lot of jobs from those of us who have lived here a long time, and changed the general feel of Portland. This used to be a unique, creative city, but the transplants have absorbed that and morphed it into a trendy, exclusivist city.
So I recommend Portland if you are just thinking about moving here, but you didn't grow up here, or if you are the type that likes to live in the shelter of your home and office; basically those who don't care about the social culture that once was Portland, OR.
