Southern Transplant in Portland
Star Rating - 10/8/2007
I can say I moved for love, and that is it. The only reason I moved here is because my spouse's family lives here and he wanted to live close to his family for a change. I miss the warm sun, the family gatherings, the family gatherings that includes relatives and new comers to the city. Here is the backwards, two face, 'I am not a racist' Racist. This is suppose to be an open minded, free spirited city, HA! The cost living is so high, the average person can't afford to buy, a house in the South in a major suburb is about $150,000 to 225,000, but in Portland, a piece of crap is starting at $350,000. And for me the pay is the same, there was not a cost of living increase in pay, so the cost of food, gas and other necessities are outrageous. Definitely, there is no place like home!

Di, I'm really surprised as I read your post. I feel bad that your experience hasn't been great. The cost of living is high, I know. I have been planning to relocate to Portland (or at least the area) for a while. I fell in love with it from the first time I visited, which I now do regularly and have friends there. As for Sophie, who replied to your post, I really don't get it. You refer to all the 'women over 25' who are 'so ugly and their skin sags'. You suggest that people in Portland are judgemental. I've found there is nothing further from the truth, in my own experience. I'm from the South, and it's a running joke between my friends in Portland and myself that they are some of the healthiest people I know. Perhaps because they get out and enjoy all there is to do...the mountains, the coast, etc... I hope things get better for you, genuinely, because it seems that Portland may not be exclusively the reason you sound so unhappy.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. I moved here from Arizona 2 yrs. ago and immediately noticed how smug people are and how nasty and totally cloudy it is most of the year. You can't say 'excuse me' in a store to get by someone - if you do they'll snicker and sneer at you. In Arizona strangers constantly complimented my mothering skills and adorable children. Here people look at you as if you're shameful for having children, like they're mocking your pain. Everyone acts so freakin' perfect and women over 25 are so ugly and their skin sags. I have been tense and anxious ever since we moved. I so miss and need my warm, dry sunshine all year round. We are saving to move back to Arizona and I CAN'T WAIT to be in heaven again and with my family and non-judgemental friends. I will never come back to this hell in Oregon again, only to visit friends!!!
