Review of Portland, Oregon

Poor for business , living quality slow/small
Star Rating - 8/8/2011
Moved to Portland around 2001. Owned a business there for 7 years. HIGH fees for such a unbiz friendly and unsophisticated business environment.
Because I was long experienced in my field my business was popular but after 7 years I pulled the plug and moved back to my midwest metropolis
which i see now is so very pro small business compared to Portland.
High min wage and no tip credit , high unemployment fees because ANYONE can get themselves fired after 3 days and collect unemployment pronto. It is the most ridiculous of all states, stacked against the employer to the extreme. Also do not use local vendors for things like linen, towel service, business insurance and other such vendors.GO WITH NATIONAL COMPANIES.
The Tanya Harding Syndrome in business: Don't improve your business and product but sabotage other businesses is the theme in Portland. I have to say the worst problem was harassment from other long time local businesses to such an extreme it was almost unreal. They do not like a 'stranger' coming to town, setting up shop and doing well. There is an old 'hippie biz mafia' that will try to take you down if you are successful and are they PERSISTENT!Cyber harassment, other owners and their friends, relatives entering and hassling my staff and myself. Sending their kids to walk on the front windowsill dangerously until I had to ask them to stop then blowing up and making ugly scenes. I NEVER experienced any such thing in my big city and never have since I left Portland. My restroom toilets were jammed purposefully mid day while we were busy, had to close until repaired. Friends of these businesses that were on local press payroll hassled me. It was endless. This even topped the crime I dealt with on a regular. Many customers knew of it and said i should put a video on youtube and expose it all.Why bother. I pulled the plug and set up back home and have never experienced that again. So beware and prepare. My web based security cameras helped but didn't stop it completely. I was just too clean, popular, biz savvy and raised the bar too far. Now I am back in a far healthier city economically, business friendly, higher standards to work in alongside mature business owners who simply work on their deal. It was an interesting lesson. Wholesale prices in Portland are also about 25% higher so figure that in to your biz plan.

It is a beautiful state and coast. Population is very rule following and very strict as far as politics go and if you ,as a business owner, don't tow the line you will be blackballed quickly. I am non political so I didn't enter in but a few others I saw suffer greatly from hate gossip, lies and review/cyber harassment. Difficult to make friends unless you are obsessed politically or are a conspiracy obsessive. It was mind boggling. Too 'Peter Pan' a city for me. No objective thinking done here. Also missed my world class museums , culture and
variety of racial spread in my metropolis. Felt squeezed way down as far as options day to day. I am not a pot smoker nor is alcohol a big part of my life so I fell out of line there too. After a few times trying to find a legit dentist and a health care person I began flying back to my metropolis for check ups and dental because I was harmed by sub standard care a few times in Portland.I even had an optometrist TWICE put someone else's lens prescription in my eyeglasses. I really think it is the worship of getting high out there that causes such. Maybe just a string of bad co-incidences but after awhile I doubted that. Whew..what a costly and depressing learning experience in all.

To be honest, you just sound like a miserably unhappy person who is a bit delusional. I find your story about the kids coming to your window far fetched and ridiculous. And in a metro area of 2 million plus, you couldn't find a good dentist or optometrist? Wow. I hope people who come here take your over the top comment with a grain of salt.

Lets talk about Portland, and also include other marine side weather affected cities in this region. Seattle is similarly rain prone, just 50 or so less days of it. In between there are pockets that are drier, colder and more seasonally affected. that said, Portland is unique, and quite so in that outdoor enthusiast mode. Require clear skies? Take a quick 40mi travel to Multnomah Falls, see the Gorge that day in all its glory. Need a quick wknd get away but only want to drive an hour or so? The surfside awaits, crashing waves, once in a life time tidepools, rustic camp sites, Indian beach alone at high tide will shock anyones senses. The 85mi sunset highway drive alone has enough scenic beauty to uplift a person into that Northwest magic of mountainside native earthiness. Do you like to cruise in the open wind, trailing along leisurely while taking in Oregon's Forest Park, or jump off for a bit and walk up a side trail to one of many spectacular water falls(they are glorious beyond words)? Yes, from my most recent excursions into Portland proper, there is an aloofness, almost a aloneness of sorts present. Grey skies, wet cold soaking weather numbs against the physical body in the winter, spring is also very rain present but with one caveat, by late April, a glory of flowering trees and gardens explodes. This wave of color extends into almost every yard and block, almost surreal in its water color like landscape. From having lived prior in Portland for a decade, rain and its resulting affects were well received. Clean fresh air, droplets of pacific oriented moisture on your face is almost a magical moment by moment exp. Do I like rain? Thats way too generic, as having exp both east and west, with a dozen Midwest yrs in between, found it's incomparable to a day in the NW. I read through where while at Ft Clatsop OR, Merriweather Lewis of the Lewis and Clark expidition wrote of the daily incessant rainfall. So there you find atleast one person who apparently could not see the trees for the forest so to speak, they were also anxious to bring back the trips findings to the President. Marine environments are exactly that, to complain that its soggy, wet and so forth only describes what the Pacific Northwest is and why it exists at all. Job wise, yes its a tough go if not prepared, but not anymore than say planning a vacation and all its pros and cons. We have spent 19yrs removed from Portland, many of those in the Midwest(Madison WI and Seattle WA). During that span, we have observed alot, especially why it is far more worthwhile to be where you belong, than to spend a whole life economically prospering but languishing constantly as to what might have been. As of this posting, we are 4yrs and counting to our move back, maybe Portland but within that metro vicinity for sure. Recommend Portland to others? Not sure, but gladly discuss details, including perceptions and realities. Do your homework before coming, explore employment possibilities, look for feedback from others that dont mind questions. Those of you that have made this place your home, be real, remeber you roots, plenty of us have rural farm backgrounds such as myself. many friends from North Dakota have made the move, all are still there in Portland, and from what recent heard, not ever considering any move back, not ever!

OMG, the Tonya Harding thing is real. People here are very threatened when you do not stoop to their level of mediocrity, and they will lash out. I have also had the experience of having medical professionals screw up to the point that I wondered if I was putting myself at risk. The level of professionalism here is sub-par in general.
