Review of Portland, Oregon

Portland is wonderful
Star Rating - 6/16/2007
We moved here almost exactly one year ago from the midwest, and my wife and I still look at each other and say "can you believe we live here?" I've lived in several major metropolitan areas including Boston, Chicago and St. Louis, and I've been chuckling at the negative comments here about rain, unfriendliness, "godless liberals" and drug use. We live ten minutes from downtown in a postcard-perfect neighborhood (indie rock meets norman rockwell) and i work downtown. This is a clean, very liveable city with great mass transit. I guess if you're conservative, this probably isn't the place for you. But if you are a fair, open-minded person with moderate to progressive values, you will love this city. As for the rain, it's really overhyped. It does get steadily overcast and misty starting in October through January, but it's VERY temperate, and by February, the rain showers are interrupted by sunshine and blooming flowersl By july through september, it's the most gorgous weather imaginable with unlimited outdoor activities within two hours in any direction.

Thank you for being a nice "sunbreak" in my quest for relocation. My husband and I currently live in Chicago, about a mile from downtown. We want to own a home and have kids someday and it is just not possible here. Cost of living and condo ownership are priced out of reach. Forget the suburbs, the sprawl goes on for hours outside of the city. I would have to commute for over 3 hours a day to find a neighborhood we could afford. My husband is from Portland/Beaverton originally and I fell in love with the city when I visited. It's so clean with a gorgeous downtown! I'm not looking for a giant house, just a house. The fact that there is housing for under 300k is amazing to me. My husband is working on getting a job transfer and we are out of here!

Just curious, what do you do for work in Portland? And is your salary commensurate with what you would be making in say, Boston or Chicago? From friends I've talked to out there, it's cleaned up quite a lot over the last 15 years--less junkies and homeless--but the economy hasn't improved much, especially since all the newcomers have created ever greater competition for the few good professional jobs that do exist. Plus, all the hipsters flocking there to be middle-aged bartenders, I mean rock stars, must get really annoying.
