Review of Portland, Oregon

Some people will find more good than bad here, others, like me, have decided Portland is definitely not working for them. I moved here 5 years ago for a person, not the place (that person is long gone from my life). Also, I just wanted a change of scenery at the time and I didn't care what it was. With all due respect to the people who find beauty in the greenery and comfort in the never-ended grey drizzly conditions, I have never understood what people mean when they say it is "so pretty here". I find it majorly depressing. All the soggy, drizzly, annoying, wet dog-smelling weather that never ends (by the end of the rainy season I feel like I'm psychotic).

Also, some people say Portlanders are "nice" but watch the heck out if you're not ultra-extreme liberal. There are liberal nazis here; people who burn with violent hatred towards anyone who does not agree with them...oh and they're the 'tolerant' ones. Plenty of over-educated, under-employed, arrogant, Prius driving, organic produce eating, gender-neutral people. Again, in some people's opinions, this is heaven on earth. Do be aware that the city is crawling with mentally ill homeless and yes, the leadership here caters to them so they're not going anywhere. They're very charming too, sometimes they scream at people who won't give them spare change. I've been chased by a transient before.

Relocation is not always a breeze, thus I have been stuck here this long. My plan is to go back to so. California. I am more determined now than ever as the city really does get worse and worse right before my eyes. And lastly, in my opinion, there is something very wrong with a city that does not have an oldies station on the radio.

Hello Catherine, Although I am one of those "ultra-extreme liberals" you mention encountering here in Portland (I am, in fact, a Socialist), I have to agree with so much that you have observed about Portland. I just received my first piece of hate email from a reader here who denigrated my "subjective, negative" review. Well, of course it's subjective and negative - I am writing from my own experience of Portland. I didn't realize that we were supposed to be writing fiction. In any case, I do agree that racism is rife in Portland. I come from a mixed race family (though I myself am Caucasian), and my relatives of a darker shade, with one exception, will not vist me here in Portland because they are afraid that they will be badly treated. Luther Vandross isn't my cup of tea (I am more of a trad jazz devotee), but you are right - I doubt that any of my neighbors would know who he is. The one relative who did visit me here two summers ago, my beautiful black niece, was sitting on the steps in front of my house one afternoon, and my neighbors, having seen her, actually called me up to say that there was - oh my! - a "suspicious looking" young woman in front of my house, and should they call the cops? This in the Belmont/Hawthorne so-called 'hotbed of liberalism'. If I am "negative" about Portland, perhaops it is because I have excellent reasons to be. Experiencing a member of my family who is just sitting on the front steps with a book, enjoying a summer's day in the sun, being treated like crap solely because of her color is a rather negative affair.

I am back 3 years later to add to this review. Generally my opinion has not changed. But since being continually stuck here because of lack of relocating resources, I thought of other items to add for anyone interested in moving here. I have come to realize Portland is one of the whitest places I have ever been. Yes, there are non-white people living here, but I mean the culture (well, and all the white faces too). It's quite funny because Portlanders are of course obsessed with not being racist, but I am willing to be you can count on 1 hand the number of white people who who have any idea who Luther Vandross is (or any other r&b greats ) The people here are so unbalanaced. They are not music lovers, or culture lovers, they have a very narrow idea of what is "good". Also, Portlanders generally have no idea of how behind and backwards they are. They are 10 - 15 years behind what people in truly diverse and creative places are doing. The radio stations here are so white it's painful. Granted, I have met some people that I love here, but I must tell you they do not fit the typical Portland profile. Hope that helps.
