great for families

I have lived in the Portland area for about 5 years. We started out in the suburbs and moved into town 2 years ago. Within inner north east and southeast Portland there are wonderful community oriented neighborhoods with lots of young children. Small local businesses are all over the place. Houses are full of character. People are very friendly. There are lots of cultural events going on. The city itself tries to support sustainable development, control sprawl, and promote community. We love Portland. The only exception for us is the rainy dreary weather which can linger on into springtime. If it wasn't for that I think Portland has to be one of the best cities in the country. (I have lived in and visited many places.) We have really wonderful families living all around us. We find the suburbs to be full of strip malls, big chain stores, and tract house developments. We love the city of Portland itself, and would never choose a suburb over Portland again.
