Review of Tampa, Florida

Searching for my next home - in Tampa?
Star Rating - 12/30/2012
I recently moved to South Florida after living in PA all my life. We lived in Collegeville, about 30 miles outside of Philly. It's a small town with beautiful communities. We owned our home, which regrettably we sold and headed to florida in search of more laid back living. Did we get a rude awakening. Since we've been here, I found work and promptly lost my job, something I never experienced before. My husband found work right away but works 10 times harder than he every did, for less money. We thought we were moving to paradise, but I think we left paradise behind!

I absolutely hate the Gold Coast. I could never afford a home here and it's too overly commercial. We drive around looking for a neighborhood I might like to live in, but only miss PA more. Originally, we wanted to move to the Tampa area but people said work would be hard to find. I think I would like the west coast better than the east. The east is too overly developed already. Miami was so over the top that I couldn't wait to get out of there. Its a nice place to visit or vacation in but I wouldn't want to live there. I guess I'm a quiet country girl at heart.

Can anyone tell me about living in Tampa and jobs? I really think I would like the west better but at this point, I'd like to hear from folks living in the area before making any moves. I've already screwed up once and I don't want to keep hopping all over florida finding a place to live. I'd appreciate any locals sharing their experience and thoughts with me. - Thanks!

My family and I moved from the west coast to Sanatoga / Limerick in the late 90's and enjoyed the Collegeville Inn. We loved the area and people, but were transferred to Western Wisconsin. I love the climate in the west, but cost of living was prohibitive. Madness. Commutes in the larger metro areas will take years off your life. Unless you are willing to live in AZ, UT, ID or locations outside of Denver/Colorado Springs, you may find living expenses to be budjet breaking. Problem is most work is not readily available in smaller communities unless your city/county/state worker or small bussiness owner. We love living where we are now, and are fortunate to have good incomes. La Crosse WI, Eau Claire WI, Rochester MN, Madison WI general area's are similar to your hometown. The winters are much harsher temp wise, but summers are nicer. Tons of water sports. Cost of living is sane. Kids grow up well here. Good family living. Jobs for professionals in Madison & Rochester, and more technical/trades type in the smaller cities of 50k people and less. Hope that helps a bit

Me and my wife used to live in Clearwater (west of Tampa across the bay), and I headed back to visit on Nov 29 and although I was disappointed with the housing cost, there are really good deals everywhere and I found a piece of property priced good in the city of Seffner so I could only say I hope you the best in your search but never give up on your dreams just because you feel discouraged and definately consider the surrounding areas because everyone is also looking for that better deal too but maybe they aren't considering or willing to live just outside their local city area but the property I found is only 12 miles east of Tampa and a lot more quiet just perfect in the country. Also... there is "always" someone to not only tell you something negative but also something positive so you are better off exploring yourself but the one thing I can tell you from working construction all over Miami is that it is crazy busy there but you're going to get that in any city so look around your rural areas if your feeling over whelmed but don't give up on Florida either even if you have a bad experience in one location in-particular because we all do and it can really get the best of any of us if we let it, although I have always heard that many if not the majority of Floridians say the west side of Florida is the best (but again you need to experience this for your self because everyone's opinion might not be yours)whereas I use to be a city guy but I have slowed down and I also don't like it so much anymore but I still want to be close enough to the city for work and resources.
