Review of West Virginia, West Virginia

Beautiful State but very low in quality of life.
Star Rating - 11/7/2010
About the only good things I can say about WV is that it is a beautiful state and that the people are friendly here but that's about it. The cost of living is relatively low compared to bigger metro areas is probably one more good thing. But the summers are hot and humid, it's a bad state for people with allergies, the infrastructure is not that great, shopping is horrible, there is no public trnsportation whatsoever, the local governments are corrupt, the politics is not progressive at all, there is no culture, there are not enough parks or things to do, and the people are uneducated for the most part. Wages are low. There are not many good job opportunities. Nice place to visit but you do no want to live here.

To Mark who wrote this...I notice you live in WV. If you don't like living here, why don't you move? I have lived in WV my whole life and have traveled the globe and I'll always return home to WV. I think there is no greater place. Maybe you just aren't happy in Fairmont but where I live, I always have things to do...parks, shopping, concerts, dining, etc. (and I live in a small town of 8,000 people!) Also, the complaints about summer..really? I'm grateful we live in a place that can enjoy all 4 seasons. I agree that WV is beautiful and that the people are friendly but I disagree with your negativity toward everything and everyone else. I advise people to visit WV themselves so they can gain their own opinion. Thanks.

Do NOT move to WV. We retired and moved here 6 years ago. Now we find ourselves in the middle of the Marcellus shale region and the out of state natural gas drilling companies have moved in to trash the place just like was done during the coal and lumber booms. WV will still be a welfare state when they leave after making millions and trashing the environment, contaminating our drinking water, and putting huge well pads (taking 7-8 acres away from land owners (who don't own their mineral rights) and having their property values decrease significantly if a marcellus gas well is on or near their property. I regret the day we moved hear knowing what we now know. I hate WV but we can never get our money out of this place we own BECAUSE of the natural gas drillers converging on the unsuspecting hillbillies in WV. WV is collateral damage...a sacrifice state for anything environmental. I see stuff going on here (such as oil lines emptying in streams, etc.) that would never be tolerated anywhere else in the country. Don't even think about moving here ! In particular Doddridge, Harrison, and Wetzel counties to name a few that natural gas drilling has trashed. (Hey, I'm a conservative republican, no tree hugger. But Bush & Chaney sold us out when they exempted Oil and gas drillers from the clean water act in 2005. Haliburton loop hole. Dangers of hydro-fracking for natural gas. Google these terms, read about it, and stay the hell away from WV if you want your health and your home and land to be safe.
