Get out of MISSOURI As Soon as You can.......OR EL
Star Rating - 1/25/2008
I wish I could say good things about Missouri but I can't. To make a long story short, I have lived there all my life and have found it to be one of the worst if not the worst place to live. Missouri is a non progressive and backward going state if I have ever seen one; every negative comment you have read is true. The economy is in shambles at best(to put it mildly) and it is a highly segregated place to live. Blacks on one side- of the Blanchette Bridge- Whites on the other. Jobs and companies are leaving Missouri in flocks and for several years between 2001-2006 Missouri lead the way in the most jobs lost in the country (unemployment is high as hell). If you don't want to grow then this the place for you; I promise you will remain stagnated. My husband and I both have College degrees (Several of them)and could not even find jobs decent enough to pay student loans. The offers I received were so low I was better off staying at home with my child. The jobs are EXTEMELY low paying ( I have never seen such). Anyone that lives there that had anything nice worked at CHRYSLER, GM, or FORD and now that those are no more you are really seeing the economic backlash. Needless to say my husband and I finally decided after many years we'd had enough. We applied for jobs in Chicago and were picked up instantly. Within 6 months of moving from Missouri we trippled our Gross Income and I do mean Trippled. We both have professional jobs and have just purhchased a beautiful home outside of Aurora. It would have NEVER happened in Missouri. I am writing this for anyone contemplating the decision to leave (especially if your still too young to throw your future away). Just do It. I did and I love Chicago; it's diverse, it's huge and so educational. No matter how old you are black or white there is something for you in Chicago, you will never do it all. I WILL NEVER MOVE BACK TO MISSOURI under any circumstances. It's boaring, it's broke and it's segregated and the local government could care less. You wont make enough to even get by; do yourself a favor LEAVE. It will be hard at first but trust me it will pass:)

it's not that bad. honestly, it pretty much reflects the majority of america. it's not that segregated. i lived in st. louis city for years, and the population is very diverse and interesting, reflecting many cultures and nationalities. of course, if you live in the suburbs or surrounding counties it's segregated, but it's like that all over the country - even chicago. it's just how suburbs are in this country. i love chicago, too. i also love new york, california, florida, texas, colorado...every state has something interesting to offer, as well as it's downfalls. in fact, last time i checked the illinois economy was in complete shambles (remember when they had to shut down government offices for a day to try to save money?) it's completely unfair to point a finger at missouri's economy when the entire country is experiencing economic hardship. chicago is well known for having a poor school system. only about 52% of students even graduate high school in chicago, so it's unfair to say it's a more educated population. i'm a statistician and accountant, by the way. it's always easier to blame somebody else and be negative, isn't it?

Maybe you couldn't get a decent job because you are unable to spell, i.e., "trippled" and "boaring". I have lived in MO before and while it's not perfect, I found the people to be much like they are everywhere. Personally, I find Chicago to be very expensive and the weather is miserable. As for things to do, well I'm a mom and I prefer family times/outings, so the big city isn't necessarily panacea for me. So I guess to each his own. Good luck in your new life, sounds like you are happy now.
