Review of Portland, Oregon

MSN ranked 1st in "10 Most Unhappy Places"
Star Rating - 3/6/2009
I had to pick myself up off the floor when I read this. MSN had an article yesterday on the "10 Most Unhappy Places", and my old home town ranked first. I'm not surprised, and it makes me all the more grateful for my new life in Florida. It's been 4 years now, and if I knew life was this much better on the sunny side I would have packed my bags 30 years ago. MSN cited Portland's cloudy days, rate of depression, suicide (#1, by the way), divorce rate, among others giving Portland this lovely title. I do miss the culture, and the people are great (although seemingly sad from my current perspective) but Lord knows I don't miss the weather. I sometimes check Portland's 10 day weather forecast just to see what sucky weather I'm missing out on. Then I go for a ride in my Mustang GT convertible and soak up my Florida sunshine.

SUN - it does a body good........

I humbly stand corrected. The article read #12 in suicide and #1 in rates of depression. My source was MSN - take it for what it's worth. I have better things to do with my time than chase their sources. I'm just glad I no longer live in the dreary N.W. I am glad somebody likes it there, otherwise the Russians would probably just take it over, you know?

My time in Oregon ends in 2010. I think Oregon as well as Portland is beautiful georgraphy wise and that is it. Really I have wondered why there were not news reports stating how despressing this city really is. It is far from just being the weather that is dreary it is the people. There are some nice people here but the large amounts of the following is depressing. People that never say hello and bury themselves in a crossword or in their head phones everywhere. People that continually refer to themselves being an alcoholic or in drug rehab. To say there are alot of drug problems and property crime here would be an understatement. People that have a Bachelors degree but rather only work part time on a job here and there for minimum wage. Really whats with the dirty zombies and all these pit bulls wandering about the streets. The mayor here has all sorts of personal problems, and doesn't really seem like a professional person. So many of the people here really look unkept and are just plain aloof in behavior. The natives don't want to pay any form of taxes and allow themselves to be light railed to death but don't push to clean up their low life society. No wonder there is such a noticeable amount of have and have nots in too small a space such as Portland. I can see why there is so much suicide here, if I had to remain here Id jump off a bridge also. Its just the most depressing city in America and really deserved the title from a very respectable Review. Business weekly.

#1 in suicide - interesting. The article (and my other research) indicates number 12 out of major US cities. Do you have a source for your data?
