Review of Toledo, Ohio

NYC Transplant to Toledo
Star Rating - 9/24/2018
I’m from NYC and now live in Toledo. It was a culture shock to move here. Obviously you cant compare the two in terms of things to do so I won’t get into that. If you have a little kid you can keep them entertained with a really nice zoo, art museum, great playgrounds and metropark system and Cedar Point (nice amusement park) is fairly close. For adults it’s dismal. BUT the great part is the housing cost. You can get a decent 1 bedroom for $750.00. You can get a luxury one bedroom in Perrysburg full of great amenities for 1500.00. This is half of what I paid in Manhattan for a much smaller place. When I told my friends in NY that I was moving here they said Toledo was the armpit of the country. This is not true, there are far worse places to end up. The people are a little simple and backward and I was amazed at how much racism there is from white people. They make racial slurs that you could never say out loud in a professional setting back East. I miss having a more racially mixed and international group of friends. Ann Arbor MI is one hour away, home of University of Michigan. Many more cultural things to do, international crowd and cool bars and restaurants. A lot of people who live there are not from the Midwest which is nice. ( I like midwesterners but not all the time.) MY ADVICE: if you are going to live here and from a larger city, enjoy how far your money can get you in terms of a nice apartment or house. Enjoy the extra space and amenities that you’d have to pay triple for in major cities. Make your home your refuge for the long winters. Don’t expect a lot in terms of culture but enjoy the simple things. And remember that it’s not great but certainly not the “armpit of the world”.

You are most certainly correct that Toledo is not the worst place you could possibly live but it is among the worst in the nation. It probably is not so bad if you are here for a short time. And you're correct that for adults it is dismal. The number of things that an adult can do within a 1 hour drive are very restrictive. Yes there's a great zoo and a museum and a symphony. I've lived in this area, both Southeastern Michigan and northwestern Ohio my entire life. I have a different perspective than someone who's been here a short time. Most people who live here were born here and are stuck or they are here not by choice... perhaps a job. After living here for a number of years you'll begin to understand how dismally awful it is being stuck in the house 7 months out of the year because of crappy, cold, icy, snowy, rainy, foggy weather. You will run out of things to do and you will get so sick of doing them that you would rather go anywhere to escape. We are finally making the move away from this dismal wasteland this summer by moving to Arizona. There is no such thing as a perfect place to live but there are places that make you want to puke and Toledo is one of them as is the entire state of Ohio. Ohio in general sucks ass. The cultural climate here is one revolving around which sports team is currently your favorite Ohio State or Michigan. It is like a mental disease in this part of the country. College football is about all these dumb nitwits think about. As for me and my kids we're leaving for a better future as there are no jobs to be had and the weather is enough to make anyone depressed especially anyone who suffers from seasonal affective disorder. There are basically two things to do in this town after you've used up the three things they have, the zoo, museum and metro Parks. They are eat and sleep. that's why this town is one of the testing grounds for new fast-food joints there everywhere!. Many people here are gross obese uneducated racist pieces of shit and they almost all smoke. And it's not like you can get in your car and drive a couple hours and get away from it either because it's the same in either direction for a whole day's drive. My advice don't put down roots here unless you want to be miserable. Ohio has a way of sinking its talons into you and it's very difficult to escape like a fish trying to wriggle its way off a hook.
