Review of Austin, Texas

Austin is over rated
Star Rating - 5/30/2013
I lived in Austin for about 3 years. Austin definitely has a few gems, like Zilker Park, and Barton Springs pool, and plenty of good restaurants, but I really thought Austin as a whole is way over rated. Now that Austin has been "discovered" it has really gotten way too crowded. And because of that the traffic is unbearable. Austin is very hot too, that was the hardest for me to deal with. Also, if you are used to living in a state that is within a short drive to other surrounding states, you might feel a bit isolated.

Your comment should be instructive to anybody who's considering moving to Austin. I've been here for 3 years, and currently loving it. We can afford a lifestyle that includes buying a home a mile and a half from downtown, and because we work from home- PRESTO! We walk a ton and avoid most of the crazy traffic. If I had to commute to get to a job, I'd get out of here in a New York minute. Austin planned very poorly for the extremely fast population growth it courted. The town doubled in size over the last decade, and is projected to do it again in another 9. With 7,000 people a month moving in, not hard to see it. This city, which likes to call itself "green", is going to have to get down with mass transit in a hurry, or the quality of life factor for most is going to go way, way down. But we came here after carefully evaluating all the pluses and minuses of Austin, and still decided to settle. Far too many, though, are moving here mainly because of the "cool factor" and the buzz. Bad choice, for the "on a whim" movers. No city is going to last long for people who are just following the in crowd. I wonder if you saw some of the same?
