Oriental is situated on a peninsula near the mouth of the Neuse River, the widest river in the U.S. The Neuse flows into the Pamlico Sound offering some of the best sailing and fishing on the East Coast. Oriental, “The Sailing Capital of the Carolinas”, boasts having more boats than people with 2,000 cruising yachts docked at the local marinas. The Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway passes just off shore, running from New York to Florida and providing easy access to the Atlantic Ocean, just 25 miles east.
If you are not familiar with the on-shore life in Pamlico County, you are in for a treat. Oriental, in particular, has a life-style flavor that has almost phased out of existence in this country. The Village itself is very small—most residents bicycle or walk to the Post Office, Bank, or grocery. The population has subtly shifted from the native fishermen and farmers to new people seeking to maintain the ambience of un-locked doors, friendly waves from everyone, chats at the hardware store, fish and blue-claw crab caught at their back-yard docks. If you are looking for a relaxing lifestyle in friendly surroundings, you will love it here!
