Review of Indiana, Indiana

Indiana Rocks!
Star Rating - 2/26/2019
I grew up in Indiana and when I became an adult, I left. I sometimes travel through and whenever I do it just makes me sad. There's no pride of ownership in Indiana. It's like everyone who cared left. Maybe they did. Those who remain sure don't care. Everything's falling apart. Crime is out of control. They can't fill potholes. The sewers in Indianapolis routinely explode and the city smells like the back end of a dog. Drug abuse (a problem everywhere) is acute here. I get no joy from this. Indiana was a nice state at one time. Now it's just a lesson that shows what happens when nobody cares about the greater good. If you're thinking of moving to Indiana, do yourself a favor and check out Oklahoma or Louisiana. Yes, those states suck, too, but at least it's a little warmer.

I live in a middle-class suburb of Indianapolis that has been named the best place to live in the United States. I've also visited many pleasant small and mid-sized towns throughout the state. Indianapolis has all the problems of any other major city, but it has its nice areas too. It really matters where you go. Frankly, I can't think of anywhere better to raise my family. We feel safe, and the cost of living is cheap. We hope to retire south just for the better weather, but it's been hard finding a place that suits our lifestyle and budget as well as Indiana does.

I notice a lot of people giving Indiana good reviews who are from the southern part of the state. I think its worth noting that the southern and northern halves of the state are COMPLETELY different. If you tell someone from Lake county that Indiana is one of the best places to live in the country, they're going to look at you like you have a third arm. The weather is miserable, the people are miserable, its ground zero for the American drug epidemic, no interesting geography, and the lake actually makes the situation worse. You might as well live in Seattle with how gloomy it is here. At least Seattle is temperate and doesn't have 4.5 month-long winters. The southern part of the state is a lot more like Kentucky, and in some cases Appalachia. I liken it to southern Ohio, where there are hills, beautiful state parks, crystal-clear creeks and rivers, and much better weather than in the north. Far less people too, which is a plus imo. The only reason you'd want to live in the northern part of the state is if you have the displeasure of needing to go to Chicago for work, or if you needed a place to run from Illinois to without leaving the area entirely. I don't exaggerate when I say a majority of my town is transplants from Illinois.
