I grew up in Jay and lived there up until I was 19. Living there was absolute hell for so many reasons. The population is very small and 98% white people. Most of the population is racist, homophobic, and hypocritical “Christian” people. They use religion as a mask when the town is filled with drug activity and sex offenders, just check the registered sex offenders map for yourself if you want to verify. The school had a few teachers that really cared and wanted to educate- Mrs. Williamson and Mrs. Youngblood were amazing. However, athletics are the main focus of the school and coaches who are also teachers don’t even pretend to teach the students. Your last name also determines everything, as students with prominent families get special treatment and don’t even try to hide it. I was valedictorian of my class and participated in sports and clubs, and even having an involved and relatively positive experience personally, I would not recommend letting your child grow up there. In addition, the gossip level among people is insane, and everyone knows everyone so news travels really fast. I honestly am so glad to have gotten out of that town and I really hope as new generations come up they can shift what this town has become and make it a more welcoming and thriving place.
