Review of Portland, Oregon

Oregon, and Portland in particular, have reputations for being very liberal (whatever that means). However, the truth is more complicated. Inner Portland--downtown, the inner East Side and innermost West Side--are very liberal, highly educated and affluent. The further you go from the river, the more right wing it gets...until you are in the very conservative suburbs of Gresham, Clackamas and Newport. Kind of like a set of concentric circles, the middle being downtown and the Pearl District.

The net result is a heavily democratic city (and politically mixed wealthy, inner suburbs) surrounded by VERY conservative, gun-oriented, religious suburbs. Sounds like a lot of cities, but I think it is more intensely evident here. And outside of the Portland and Eugene metro areas, Oregon and Southern Washington are extremely conservative, looking more like Idaho than California.

STAY OUT OF SPRINGFIELD IF YOU ARE LIBERAL. CANBY TOO. EUGENE IS COOL, ITS A COLLEGE TOWN. UNFORTUNATELY, THE FEW PARTS OF PORTLAND THAT ARE "HIPPY LIKE" HAVE BEEN OVER TAKEN BY YUPPIES, AND THEY OPEN THESE STUPID USELESS STORES THAT SELL STUFFED DOLLS, BARS OF SOAP, CANDLES, WICKER BASKETS WITH GOOFY STUFF IN THEM. USELESS STUFF REALLY. IT SEEMS THAT THE RICH HUSBANDS LET THEIR BORED WIVE'S OPEN STORES LIKE THESE TO HAVE SOMETHING TO DO. ITS JUST TOO BAD THEY SQUASH OUT THE MOST UNIQUE PARTS OF TOWN--THE OLD HIPPIES. YES, THEY ACTUALLY STILL EXIST IN PORTLAND!!! BEING AN OLD HIPPY MYSELF I LOVE SEEING THESE YOUNG KIDS. MISS THEM. IM STUCK IN DENVER (SINCE 2003) AND MISS IT TERRIBLY. I'LL EVEN BUY A MANUFACTURED HOME JUST TO COME BACK HOME. HAD TO SELL MY $39k AFTER 16 YRS IT SOLD FOR $300,000. DIDN'T WANT TO SELL,BUT WAS IN A PINCH.
