Review of Newport, Oregon

A major disappointment...
Star Rating - 11/10/2012
I have lived in many parts of the country (and world) due to my husbands career in the construction industry, and Newport is honestly one of the worst places I have ever been. I am originally from Seattle, and prior to coming here we moved from Williston, ND. People here are less friendly, less educated, less cultered, less interesting, less tolerant and have little to no work ethic. I am not a snob, in fact it takes very little to impress me, but this is the most pathetic unaccepting uninteresting unmotivating lowest class place I have ever been. The only thing that is beautiful here is the beach...that is if you don't step on a dope needle and manage to get here the one month a year its not too foggy to see it. Nothing to do from Sep - Jun but go to Fred Meyer and watch people deal drugs in the parking lot. Oh, and don't waste your money eating out. Despite the abundance of fresh local seafood and organic produce - you won't find a decent meal here. Good luck! I can't wait to leave. Would rather go back to Williston.

You sound exactly like a snob... Hence, you saying " I am not a snob "... Every town has druggies... I'm sure North Dakota (Williston) has its share... If you look at the city data... 31% percent of people from Newport have a bachelors degree or a higher level of education... against Williston's 20%... So your claims that everyone here is less educated is moot (facts matter here) 'No magical book'. There has also been more people raped and murdered in Williston in the last ten years... Education is all around much better in Newport,OR... Although, Williston is a Red city and I am sure that is your motivation for writing this slanderous paragraph of drivel. Let me guess you're an evangelical republican ? Dope needles on the beach ? Never once have I seen that... Or even heard a local speak of it. North Dakota is a retirement state... Oregon is a cultural progressive hub, One that believes in Science also... Lets compare in another 20 years...Your talk of drugs leads me to believe you are religious... Good luck with that... Talking snakes where cool when I was 7... Then logic took over.

I traveled 9 countries, worked at 9 different corporations, most people that I have encountered belonging to the environment surrounding by investment banking or the Wall Street. There is no stock exchange market in the West coast except for Sanfrancisco Bay area. You can imagine how different is Oregon coast and CA. There are only 2000 people living in Waldport, OR. My neighbor couple are moving down there from Portland area, they would like the coast for retirement life. I visited the Depoe Bay twice last year, it was excited to watch whales with naked eyes but I don't have to go every year. The summer is great due to the sea breeze is keeping the sunny day very cool. But, not great food and too crowded when people went out for dinner. As the matter of fact, some restaurant closed down because the Fall/Winter/Spring are usually quiet , but the cars seen bumper to bumper for Summer during my last visit. The cost of living is not very low because the businesses have to pay rent for the whole year around. You will find a lot of single man and woman household, some are famous and well-off but a portion could be living on retirement savings or even government welfare. There are good school systems and school bus provided if you are living within a big town that the bus can reach. I will choose to go Newport and Lincoln Cities just for retirement since there are people and food around. I can drive school bus and become a driver if I wanted to. Just keep in mind the traffic going in and out during summer time can be frustrating. Don't expect ride share to be available, the darkness can be tough for driving at night so I found people went out dinner as early as 3-4pm.

Well said julian :) I've been back and forth from oregon coast cause with family living every where and I never once had or heard of any issue. I plan to move back to the coast this winter, hopefully good apt prices between lincoln city and newport. I love eveything about the oregon coastand want to stay for good. People exagerate how towns are from what they do not know. Look at sherwood oregon a very expensive trendy growing town that is very nice, yet with a big heroin problem a lot of people don't know about, and I know this personaly, but you would never know. Especialy a snob like some people. So don't judge a town based on what your impression is. It doesn't matter where you live in the US every place has its problems, and no way around it. I can't wait to move back to the oregon coast. Love the people, quieter towns, weather is beautiful year round, and the scenery is gorgious! Most people in the US have never even seen the ocean in person so just feel lucky you have that.
