Review of Gillette, Wyoming

Lots of money, but little class.
Star Rating - 11/3/2015
I have lived in Gillette for the past 7 years with my family. It's a very unattractive town, as far as the geography. The nearest mountain is about 60 miles away. The city is trying to make big improvements and there are areas that are newer and nicer. For being in the middle of nowhere it has an amazing recreation center. Healthcare is less than desirable, although they spent a fortune on a recent upgrade to the hospital. Housing is outrageous and of poor quality. It's not unusual to pay 300,000+ for a home with linoleum and no upgrades. Real shopping is a two hour drive away. Overall, the people are friendly, but a little rough around the edges. Generally, people here work shift work at the mines, which results in children raising themselves. This creates children who are often in trouble and exhibit a lack of respect for authority or the "traditional family." There is a lot of money in the community and that works well for the education system. All schools have the best and most current technology options. There is a huge push for sports here, so if your child is into the arts or anything else that would not qualify as a sport, they may have difficulty fitting in or being accepted. It's a bit backwards in that the kids who are high achievers and excel are at the bottom of the popularity pole, while the delinquents are glorified. Meth and other drugs are a huge problem in this town, but that seems to be a concern in most places anymore. My spouse and I are both professionals and would recommend looking elsewhere if you're goal is to raise healthy, productive members of society. Yes, there is lots of money here and the standard of living is high, but sometimes money is not everything.

It goes to show how you view this is a matter of perspective. We have lived in Gillette for four years and think the people are wonderful. We too are professionals and educated. The schools are amazing with the newest technology, low teacher/student ratio and teachers that really care about the students. My children have art and music classes every week along with PE. They have music programs every year along with student art shows. There is also the Ava art center that offers classes and birthday parties. I have found there is something here for every interest a child might have. My family is very diverse and that has been a non-issue here. Yes there are many shift workers. Most of these families actually have one stay at home parent or they work within the children's school schedule. Drugs are no more prevalent here than any other small town we have lived. Crime is low but yes of course bad things happen like anywhere else. As for housing there is a very wide gambit of homes available. Housing is a bit expensive, many homes in the 300k range however are brand new and have many upgrades. I know this because we took two years to finally buy. The hardest thing about living in Gillette is the winters. They are extremely cold and long. We have stayed in Gillette and plan to stay because it is a great place to raise children.

Welcome to Wyoming! You must be from California! This is how we are and we like it that way! How can you complain about the scenery when you chose the location lol! You could have choose Casper at the base of a mountain if that is what you wanted! The people are rough around the edges because they tell it like it is and do not sugar coat like the Dems do! If you pay attention you would learn to appreciate how people are. All of Wyoming has very high real estate and thanks to Realtors from Cali, it’s getting even higher! Now we have an inflation problem so it will get worse before it crashes and it will. In Wyoming kids tend to get into a lot of trouble because there is no programs available to help keep them off the streets. No one has bothered to create programs to keep them busy. Why exactly does sports need to equal popularity? That just sounds like the movies! I always thought that was fake movie stuff since I grew up in Wyoming and never actually saw that. Living in Wyoming is like taking a step back in time 20-30 years so you need to understand that in order to understand the state. No offense, but professionals do not exactly fit into this state!
