Not Perfect, but pretty nice - 6/17/2021
We have lived in Yucca Valley and Joshua Tree for over 20 years. The comment regarding graffiti is over exaggerated. Yes there is crime and there are some tweakers but Wal-Mart wasn't closed due to theft it was because of fire. No place is perfect. Yucca Valley is growing which a lot of long time locals don't like. The area (and Joshua Tree National Park) has become very popular and this is causing a large influx of more affluent people coming in and relocating-which again angers the old-timers who can no longer afford the rent or the cost of purchasing a home. But this happens all over in popular locations. The area itself is naturally beautiful and all the amenities are in town. Yuck'a Valley - 4/25/2020
Let me start by saying, I love the desert. Yucca used to be a sweet little town...but now that the city has allowed for many criminals to come in from other areas..a dumping ground, it has become an awful place to live. The beauty of the desert is breathtaking...but now it is a place that some low class individuals have moved to and there is trash thrown everywhere. The homeless and methed out folks have scattered shopping carts everywhere. One day we were driving around one low income area and we counted 40 stray carts. Not to mention the increase of graffiti. Because of the increasing number of undesirable people moving in, they had to close the Walmart earlier because of all the theft. The drugs is out of control. One neighbor stays up all night tweaking in his garage...it has turned into a completely sad place to live. I wish the people who were careless would just move away. Oh...and not to mention how bad people drive as well..I live in a family neighborhood and people drive 50

Retirees, military, and artists - 5/7/2019
YV has a good mix of mainly retirees, snowbirds, artists, and military families. People here are generally MORE friendly and LESS racially diverse compared to other parts of California. No big deal. I believe YV still retains the small town charm where the people at Vons and John’s Place smile and remember you, although it’s big enough to have a huge Walmart and Home Depot. There aren’t many jobs outside of retail and the military base. Tourists often visit on weekends to visit neighboring Joshua Tree National Park and it is a beautiful park, with ample hiking trails and rock climbing. If you’re not into the outdoors or mystical desert landscape, this may not be the place for you. If you like nightlife, this is far from LA. Nearby casinos, Kokopellis, Gadis, and the world famous Pappy and Harriets are your best bets for a night out, or just drive to Palm Springs. Yucca Valley is a unique and mystical environment of amazing natural beauty. It has a small-town vibe, not much traffic, quiet neighborhoods and wide-open spaces, incredible star-filled night skies and sunny days. Summer can be hot: a few days of highs around 110. Increasing humidity is an issue: residents have been complaining that it is more humid than it used to be. In dry heat swamp coolers work well but when it's humid they don't work. Swamp coolers are very inexpensive to run. New HVAC units use less electricity; install solar panels and it's free. I don't like being cooped up inside in the summer: running errands in the morning and going out after 7 is wonderful. But not every day is hot. Anything under 100 is usually acceptable. It can snow in the winter -- this is the high desert, after all. Hawaii it isn't. But if you love the desert expansiveness, it can be heaven. I love it: the feeling here is like no other. Weather in Yucca Valley - 11/1/2011
Having lived in Yucca Valley for 40 years now, I would like to comment on the climate.
I don't know if we (my wife and I) are more sensitive to heat than others, but it seems as if the summers have become increasingly more humid and last longer than years ago. I disagree that it is affordable to cool a home here. For the months of July, August and September, our average electric bill is well over $200 a month. That is keeping the house around 74 degrees.
Winters can feel quite cold when the north wind is blowing. The high desert is definitely a land of extremes with wind, high/low temperatures.
I think one can have 'desert burnout' after many years of looking at dirt and Joshua trees and miss the beauty that newcomers behold. I still love the wildlife and blue

The average July temperature is not 77 degrees, but 100. If the summers were really that cool, the place would be a bustling resort. It's pretty there, however, with a green desert and wonderful views of the San Gorgonio and San Jacinto mountains. The smog rolls in once in a while from LA, then blows out again. Yucca Valley is located about 30 minutes North of Palm Springs, CA. The cost of housing here is substantially lower than in Palm Springs. During the summer months, the average temp is approximately 20 degrees cooler, but we still enjoy very low humidity. This keeps the cost of cooling homes very low.
