Our own government set off Nuclear bombs in the US - 9/6/2021
I love the Western Slope!! While there are a lot of good things to be said about the Western Slope of Colorado, which Rifle is, there are some concerning things as well!! Lots of sunshine, almost no rain, large numbers of snakes, short supply of water, hunters paradise, Colorado River recreation. But, most alarming is that the federal government exploded a nuclear bomb 8300 ft below the surface on Sept 10, 1969!! The bomb was twice the size of the one's dropped in Japan during WW2! The bomb was used to release natural gas deposits in the limestone rock. While it worked the area is somewhat radioactive! Also, nearby New Castle has the longest burning fire in North America!! Depends what you are looking for - 4/8/2018
Been living in the area for 3 years, Rifle for half of that. The city recently upgraded the water facilities, and the north half of I-70 no longer has the nasty hard water problem. Businesses have a hard time sticking around, there's one bar, a Walmart and a City Market, and a church on every other block. The food is ok, but it seriously lacks variety. Unless you like 50 choices of bad Mexican food.
The people are nice enough, but there are a lot of high country red-necks with guns and bibles. The best part about Rifle, is its the most affordable town to live in the Roaring Fork Valley, and only an hour and 10 minutes away from Aspen, 25 away from Glenwood Springs.
However, there are some awesome things about Rifle too...like the Roan Bookcliffs that rise up behind the city, Rifle Falls, Rifle Gap and Rifle Mountain Park, which is very beautiful. Tons of ATV trails, and the Flat tops are less than an hour away. But the best of all...we have a large statue of a Read More

Drug problem - 7/16/2017
This area has a heroin/meth problem. It doesn't really impact you if you avoid it, but you tend to see a lot of tweakers/beggars/homeless around town. Water is not that great here. I had to stop drinking it. It was making me sick. In case you want details, mainly would get diarrhea from it. Stopped once I stopped drinking the water. I hear bad things about the schools, but don't have children so I can't really comment there. This town is starting to grow too fast, IMO. Doesn't have the necessary infrastructure to support too many more people. Housing prices are high, but not as bad as in the Roaring Fork Valley. There isn't really anything fun to do here. I don't mind since I'm a homebody, but those considering moving here may not find much to do if you don't like the outdoors.

All in all, decent place to live. Again, my biggest gripe is the number of people moving here. Town is getting a bit too big for my liking and congestion on I70 is slowly getting worse and Read More

Don't Believe the Numbers You See Here About Rifle - 1/19/2013
The water here is so bad, hardly anyone actually drinks it. Everyone uses filtered or bottled water. That is why the Rifle City Council last year (2012) took it upon themselves, without consulting the town citizens - general public .. the masses ... the ignorant .. the ones who will be footing the bill - to take out a $25+ million loan in order to build a super water treatment plan for a town with a population of around 7,000 people. And that "scar" along the side of the hill is actually where all the uranium was placed and covered over with gravel. It took approximately 3 years for all the trucks to drive back and forth, hauling the uranium. Not to mention the RADON. Of course, most of the Rocky Mountains have radon gas. But it would be to anyone's BEST INTEREST to check up on the true conditions of these important items before making any kind of decision to move here. You will be paying EXTRA for the water treatment plant. Who knows when that will ever be built?! First the Read More

WATER QUALITY MISLEADING - 1/28/2011
I have lived in Rifle a number of years. I NEVER drink the water!!! I have had to replace numerous metal pipes in my home with heavy-duty plastic since the water corrodes them so badly. Most people I know have some kind of water filtration system in their homes. This is the WORST water I have been in contact with in YEARS and YEARS and it is sad to think it's in Colorado, not far from the mountains. The water should be a lot purer!! EPA allows the cities along the Colorado River on the western slope to discharge their "treated" waste water into the river. The smell is so bad around New Castle, I always close my vents on my vehicle. I have no clue how EPA rates the water as being so wonderful. They obviously don't drink Read More
