CHarming Florida Home - 4/2/2007
Melbourne is a fast growing community with everyone and thier brother moving here from anyplace you name and it's to crowded, to hot and humid and everyone here from everywhere else thinks they know how to drive. The Local Goverment has no clue about what to do about the over-crowded roads and continues to build on anything that use to be protected for scrub jays and box turtles. It's not a nice small town like it use to be and after 35 years I placed my home on the market and if I can sell it you can have it...I think every person from "Long Island New York" now lives Read More

Growing tooo fast - 5/30/2006
Melbourne use to be a nice small town with all the amenities close by. Now it is growing too fast and it is too crowded. There are soo many people moving in and there is not enough room in the schools. The streets were also not planned for as much traffic as there is now. Wickham is a nightmare to drive down. At certain times of the day you may sit thru at least 3 lights just to get across an intersection. The drivers are extremely rude and do not pay attention to driving. If you take I-95 you are putting your life at risk. There are numerous crashes on a daily basis. The crime has incresed here so much that you cannot even feel safe leaving your windows open on a nice day or even your door unlocked because someone will break in, in the broad daylight. We also seem to have a lot of child predators in Melbourne and the surrounding cities. Even in the schools we have issues with inapproiate behavior amongst the teachers and children. It is just not very desirable anymore like it was 5 Read More

I found all of the above to be true and the other peoples comments too are true, I was there not too long ago and couldn't believe what was happening to what was once a Very Nice Smaller Town , with reasonable real estate prices , low taxes and very nice people . BUT thats all changed ...for the worst . It's just the opposite now . Too Bad Read More

Weather and Other Fun Stuff - 10/28/2005
The weather is Hot, Humid...and Hot. The summers are dismal, I have had my air conditioning on since February this year due to the humidity and heat. Winters are mild, but still humid much of the time, and way too short.

Also, if you dislike snakes, lizards, palmetto bugs, mosquito's and other critters, Florida is NOT for you. I have literally thousands of baby lizards in my yard right now, and that is great, because they eat the mosquitos!

Also, it is FLAT. No hills, nothing but perfectly flat ground covered by palmetto bushes, pine trees, scrub and houses. Lots of houses.

Beware, lots of folks buy homes from the great white north, move down here and lose their homes. Why? The wages here stink.

Take our local hospitals. Most people working at most of our hospitals who are not executives, MDs or RNs make less than $10.00 per hour to start. And they pay better than most other places. There are very few unions, and the Read More

Commuting and entertainment - 10/20/2005
Most businesses close by 9-10 pm.
Only 3 roads heading north and south through 3 town. Doesn't sound bad until you realize that it takes 25 minutes to drive 7 miles. No options for interconnecting cross roads. City is still building more residential without adding roads to accomadate the increased traffic Read More

The new Melbourne - 7/15/2005
What once used to be a very cool little town, is now struggling with over-development and greed. Before the housing boom of 2004, one could live on the low wages, because housing costs were very low. Not now- housing has tripled and wages have remained the same or gone down. Therefore only out-of-towners can now afford to buy homes here. And this leads to the lack of community spirit. Natural resources are being wiped out as neighbourhood after neighborhood gets quickly built by low skilled day labor types. And your really lucky if they leave a tree standing as they cement everything. The beaches are crowded out by Condos, and visited by non-respectful litterers. Traffic is horrendous as our city planners, build housing first- and then they come back later and add roads. Traffic laws are ignored and Melbourne's drivers are very close to being as aggressive and offensive as in Jacksinville and Miami. There are some small groups working hard to save some endangered lands, but "big Read More
