Rising Crime - 3/4/2008
We've lived in Orlando since 1990 and have, overall, enjoyed our time here. But in the last 5-7 years we've noticed a severe rise in crime. So much so, we're going to move (out of state) within the next 1-2 years. At our downtown home (in a nice, quiet residential area - south of the 408, west of Crystal Lake, east of Bumby) our cars have been broken into and two break-ins to our home have attempted - just in the last year!!
Before considering a move to O-Town, please seriously review the crime

2 cents - 1/29/2008
I have lived here for 4 years and have seen many positive changes until the slow down in the economy. There is some effort to make the downtown area more appealing as a live, work and play community. But it still just has a few restaurants to walk to and no movie theater. Nice park downtown, Lake Eola. You need a car here not a pedestrian/ transpotation city.
I think housing costs are cheaper than other places however the pay scale is also low because the majority of jobs are in the service industry in particular Disney.
Schools are overcrowded -many having twice as many students than what the building was designated for. Most schools have 10-30 portables outside of the building taking over play fields etc.
I would prefer more ethnic, political and religious diversity. Many people are conservative and vote Republican, do not want to pay taxes even if means we pay a lot for toll roads, have a very little in social services and the schools are

"407 represent! a.k.a. Why I love Orlando - 1/21/2008
Orlando, Florida: I'd be willing to bet most, if not all of you have heard of it. You may know it as the home of Walt Disney World or many other theme parks. We've got 3 non-Disney affialated parks, just off the top of my head (4 if you count The Holy Land Experience...I don't). Perhaps you're more familiar with the University of Central Florida? Or maybe you have family here. Or perhaps you just know it as that city you pass through to get to Miami. The city takes many different forms in our minds.
Well I'm here to give you the straight dope on Orlando (area code 407, hence the title). After you finish with UCF and get sick of Disney, there's still plenty to do and see.
Some of you may be familiar with the Beat generation, writers like Allen Ginsberg or Jack Kerouac. Well Kerouac actually had a home here in Orlando in college park, which is where he wrote the book Dharma Bums (and where the original manuscript sits to this day). Don't care

Air conditioning all year round - 1/13/2008
I like the aspects of a big city. Florida is called the "Sunshine State" for a reason, and while many retirees flock here to retire because of the warm temperatures; I feel it is becoming increasingly too warm. For the second winter in a row(it is now January) and my air conditioner still runs almost every day with at least 80% humidity and temperatures well above the 70's and into the 80's every week. I too, loved the warm weather but I can't even enjoy it because it's just too

Orlando a City of Corruption and Crime.... - 11/13/2007
I moved here in 2003 after a terrible divorce and having been the victim of a violent crime to get away from it all. Little did I know, that I was just about to get from the frying pan into the fire. The law is non-existant in city, state and local government. I have been stalked and terrorized into a heart attack by a lunatic and a psycho sheriff who uses homeland security to harm and stalk women and no recourse. He runs the county. The FBI office is one of the most corrupt ones in the nation and looks the other way, women's life in danger by a psycho sheriff does not seem to interest them. Corruption is the norm. I have moved 4 times around the city, only to repeatedly have one of the sheriffs officers move in the neighborhood and organize harassment. One wonders why, I was a witness to a corrupt congressmans actions who is a friend of the sherrifs. I am not a prejudice person, but No, I don't like to hear spanish loud blaring music and screaming at 4 am on a Wednesday morning. City
