What BestPlaces Users Say about Boise City

As the capital and largest city of Idaho, Boise City has garnered a lot of attention as a desirable place to live. With its vibrant downtown, outdoor recreation opportunities, and affordable cost of living, it's no surprise that many people have chosen to call this city their home. However, as with any place, there are always varying opinions from those who have experienced living there. Let's take a look at what some users have to say about living in Boise City.

From , JohnB shares his positive experience, stating "Boise is a great place to live! The people are friendly, the city is clean, and there is always something to do." Similarly, user, KatieM, raves about the city's outdoor activities, writing "I love the access to hiking, biking, and skiing. There's always something to do, no matter what season it is." On the other hand, some reviewers have expressed concerns about the city's growth. MaryC from says, "Boise has grown tremendously in the past few years and it's starting to feel crowded. Traffic and housing prices have increased, making it less affordable." Another user, RyanH, echoes this sentiment, stating "The growth of the city has brought in a lot of transplants from other states, which has changed the feel of the community."

FROM CALIFORNIA - STEP BACK IN TIME TO A BETTER WA - 1/7/2007
Why move to Boise (or surrounding cities Meridian, Eagle, etc)? There is
something for anyone of any age. Buy a new 2006 built home, approx 2000 sf, for a little over $200K! Don't be shocked when almost EVERYONE treats you like a close member of their community. News Note: Idaho Film Studios
is supposed to begin building on 159 acres. Boise State students are to be trained as apprentices in the film industry. Need I say anything about Boise State Broncos and the Fiesta Bowl? You will love the community support of its young adult members. Great entertainment, live theater, excellent cinemas, a downtown that is actually alive with community members, i.e., college kids, older people walking their dogs! Yes, the crime rate is below national average. Went floating on Boise River, it was gorgeous! Micron and HP are large employers; very low unemployment rate. Very pleased w/medical care: both medical doctors we use are from California (San Diego and Pacific Palisades-one Read More

What's with the religion bashing? - 12/10/2006
I just have a comment to "Dan" about the Mormon thing. Not all Mormons are like Utah Mormons... they sometimes give the rest of us a bad name. We are not a "cult", by the way, but believe in Jesus Christ, God, and the Holy Ghost. Most of us really don't care if you drink, or smoke (as long as you don't blow it in my face as I am allergic) and most of us also don't care what religion you are. I found that when I moved to Utah, I was just as offended as anyone who is not Mormon by some of the "Zealots" there. But trust me... I have lived on both sides of the coin... and there are good and bad in every sect of religion as well as ethnicities. So... I was only on here because we are looking to move to Boise - which might make it 15.0001% Mormon... and I still don't care if you drink or buy a 6 pack. Oh, and by the way, I only have one Read More

Can someone answer some questions about Boise? - 9/27/2006
What are considered the most desirable areas of Boise to live and why? Are there distinct neighborhoods?

What about weather? The annual rainfall is very low, does it feel very dry like Arizona?

What about health care? Would Boise be considered a good place to retire?

Thanks for the info.Read More

Not as many mormons as you hear - 9/24/2006
If you click on the hyperlink that says religion it tells you Boise has 15% LDS population. That's more then a lot of other big cities out of the Utah area but 15% isn't much at all. That's 85% that's not. You don't feel much of a mormon influence here at all. People of Boise love their alcohol, especially wine. You don't have to worry about getting funny looks when you walk out of 7-11 with a case of beer. I've lived in those towns so I know what you mean. You have nothing to worry about, it seems like the smallest demographics make the most Read More

For most, Boise is a great place to live - 9/24/2006
If you love recreation and outdoor activities Boise is a good place to be. There's plenty to do outdoors. Camping, hiking, biking, swimming, skiing, floating the river, etc. Those are all just minutes from home. You can also enjoy a decent nightlife in Boise. Downtown can be vibrant and is improving to be better with more downtown living coming to life.
You'll also fun into your fair share of inconviences here too. Not some of the stores your used to maybe. Also, traffic is bad but only because of bad planning. And as far as the planning is going it's not getting much better. The people are very nice but very reluctant to let the city grow or evolve. City projects get put on hold for months or years because of the community constantly. Boise is a better place for people middle aged and older, better if you have an established career. If you are looking to start anything in Boise don't bother. Crime is low but news is non-existent. Boise is a great place to live Read More

Cultural police - 9/15/2006
I may reconsider looking at Boise as a place to retire after reading the post on Morman influence there. I consider them more a cult than a religion, and they are the best example for ensuring the separation of church and state. My wife and I are empty nesters, and if the mormans take over Boise like they have numerous Utah communities, than laws and tax rates will heavily favor couples with large families. Morman's have excessive birth rates, and do ironically in a time where overpopulation of mother earth is a critical issue. If I want to order a glass of wine at dinner, or grab a six pack to bring home, the last thing I need is a LDS zealot legislating my Read More

Great place - 8/7/2006
I grew up in Boise and still live here (for the time being). The crime rates in Boise are very low for the population size. The one thing Boise needs is a little more for the 16-20 year aged crowd to do. Great little city with some big city pizzaz (minus most of the problems of the major Read More

John from Long Island, NY - 8/5/2006
Boise is a potential retirement destination for me and my wife. Also considering Arizona. We are from Long Island, NY (Suffolk Co.). My pension is not enough to support us here, because the phony and crooked politicians and real estate people have made it so expensive with house prices, property taxes, etc. Many people here are struggling, but the media only shows you the rich snobs from New York, not the working stiffs. Anyway, I hope you people in Boise are watching your political officials very closely. Be careful how they spend your tax money, if they hire cronies and relatives for government jobs, and who benefits, and who gets ultimately screwed. I would like to know if areas of boise city are prone to flooding from the Boise River, and anything else somebody has to add about the pluses and minuses of moving to Boise. No place on earth is perfect, but looks like Boise is more affordable than many other Read More

Don't get taken by the Realtors here - 7/15/2006
I am a Idaho Native and I have to tell you , that yes Idaho is a great place to live but these realtors here are waiting at the door of the hen house for all the outsiders. The housing is inflated in hopes that you all with still think you are getting a great deal. Pushing the locals out of the market and even putting more of a division between the locals and the newcomers. Do they care . No the all mighty dollars rule today, yes there is greed even in Idaho. Me I say "THe more the merrier. But in the last five years I have heard the grumbles of the people selling their houses in other states for inflated prices , coming here and acting like howard hughes, buying cars and housing they never thought they would ever own, not having a clue where they will work when the money runs out. Well, I have to give you a clue what the Idaho mentality is at it's core. It's not how much money you have or where you live or what you drive. It is however being yourself and not putting on a front, that Read More
