Resident for 36 Years - 5/1/2020
Yes, I've lived in Hyattsville for 36 years. Getting ready to sell - only because I've retired recently and Maryland is NOT tax-friendly to Retirees. The City has been taking care of itself, but recently declared itself a Sanctuary City. If that bothers you, make note of it. Also, if you are from other regions of the Country - please note that Hyattsville (like nearly all of Maryland) is predominantly Liberal Democrat - definitely NOT Conservative Republican, even though we now have a Republican Governor. Hyattsville City Police respond quickly on the off-chance you have any issues. I am not aware of there being a lot of gay people here because I never think to ask. I don't much care, really. The Arts District has a lot of new restaurants. The micro-brewery has been a big hit and was an actual hardware store of the same name (Franklin's) when I moved here in 1984. This is a Tree City USA location, and there are several City restrictions on the removal of trees, yard upkeep, etc. That Read More

My City - 3/25/2019
I grew up in West Hyattsville. The area has come a long way! We are so centrally located, only a mile or so from D.C. and the area is very diverse. People say it's up and coming, but I think it already came! Home prices are skyrocketing. The arts district in Hyattsville is really the part of town that's happening. However, I've seen a major difference on East-West Hwy. Beautiful townhomes are being built, new store, restaurants etc. This has been a best-kept secret for far too long. Where else can you buy a house so close to the District that's in walking distance to organic markets, breweries etc? Here you can for under 500k (And that's the much nicer homes) There are still some single family homes for under 300K but not for long. The area has a heavy Spanish population, lots of gay people, and families of every kind. That's what made me fall in love with it. Although I'm leaving Hyattsville because I think MD taxes are crazy, and I'm over it. It's getting to be west coast expensive, Read More

Overall it's a good place to live - 9/26/2016
I've lived in Hyattsville for 3 years now and although it has its pros and cons, overall it is a nice place to live. It is an up-and-coming town. Not only is it right on the DC border and has two convenient metro stops, but it also has a cute art district where there is a nice and artsy brunch spot, local coffee roastery, several art galleries, and new apartments.

Where I live there is plenty of convenience- a mall (complete with Amazon locker!), 2 gyms, a movie theater, and several good restaurants. Hop on the metro and you are in DC in a few stops.

The town can be ghetto, especially in certain areas, particularly West Hyattsville- that's where many of the assaults happen. The crowd that frequents the metro during off-peak hours is not the best of the bunch. However, Hyattsville also has its secrets. Like the nice, high-income homes of folks who work at the University of Maryland, or the cute, modestly-priced suburban community tucked behind the art Read More

Housing - 12/14/2012
Housing is still much more affordable in Hyattsville than in other areas just outside DC. The historic district is charming, and you'll find more quality architecture here than in many of the cookie-cutter developments in other suburbs. Very convenient to the University of Maryland. Read More

Hyattsville Maryland - 9/24/2012
Hyattsville, Maryland is an affordable community in the Washington D.C. area. Additionally, public transportation options are abundant here and there is close proximity to a shopping mall, University of Maryland College Park, University of Maryland University College (many adult students in attendance), a highly ranked high school, and reasonably priced apartments . My husband and I moved here during the summer of 2010 and we both intend to permanently settle in the D.C. area. Hyattsville, Maryland is a good community to move to for a reasonable priced community within the D.C. area and great public Read More

Unexpectedly Friendly - 4/22/2011
I've lived in several states including NJ, HI, and CT, as well as in urban Baltimore. In most of these locales, your quality of life was pretty deeply dependent on the quantity of your income. Unless you commanded the upper five salaries, it was hard to find a place to live where kids play outside together without concern, or where your neighbors would watch out for you.
At the Kirkwood apartment complex in Hyattsville, we have just that, and for considerably less monetary outlay. The largely Hispanic community here includes many young families. Just the other day, I was watching a dozen young children play soccer in one of the complex's many green spaces. There are safe, colorful playgrounds for smaller children to play in, as well, and their parents are generally outside chatting with each other while they watch them play.
This would be a positive enough indicator to me, but in the year and a half I've lived here, I've also had people be friendly to me personally, Read More

Climate - 5/21/2010
The climate is nice in Hyattsville. Their can be some real hot muggy days in the summer. It's a place that gets 4 seasons but not a lot of snow. It will snow about 4 times a year and the snow will be gone the next day. The winters are short.  Read More

Black/Hispanic Bedroom Community - 9/15/2006
Pros: Close to train stations, More shops and stores being built, close to major highways, University of Maryland, etc. Crime not as bad as some may make it out to be...

Cons: ...however it does exist. Is right on the border of the bad parts of DC. Some would say "overrun" by illegal immigrants. Its nice. Just not one of your ritzier Read More

Humidity - 6/13/2006
Ugh - i was horribly surprised by the humidity here in the Washington DC area. I came from Northern CO (after doing a 2 year stint in Boston) so it was a shock to my system.

Who know that a city built on a swamp could be so hot & sticky? (certainly not my dumba**) Read More
