Moving out of Boston - 5/29/2006
My wife and I have lived in Boston for 2 years. Compared to other places we have lived, including Fort Collins (CO), Portland (OR), Raleigh-Durham, San Francisco, Boston easily has the worst quality of life. People are not friendly, period. Nor do people seem happy at all- attitudes are poor among everybody except the very privileged. Most everybody we meet is anxious to move away.

We were hoping for a more diverse community of people as well but have been disappointed to find Boston is mostly made up of (1) rich, snobby yuppies from elitist families and New England prep schools, (2) "lifers" who have lived in the area their entire lives and are predictably cynical, unpleasant and unhappy, and (3) college students. The college students really create the sense of diversity and vitality in the area. But most of them actually leave town once they graduate. We find there aren't good attitudes about minorities compared to other places - we aren't minority, but have Read More

Frustrated & Disappointed - 5/27/2006
I live in Westborough, Massachusetts with my hunsband and his parents. We were recently married and have been looking for a place to live in The Greater Boston Area for the past year. We are looking for a reasonable 1 bedroom apt for under $1000 dollars per month that will allow a cat and offer either 2 car off street pkg or close to public transportation w/ 1 car pkg. I work as a Medical Assistant and make over 37,000 dollars per year. My husband is planning to go back to school in the fall to get his teaching certification and Masters in Art Education. While he does this he plans to work part time 10-20 hrs per week making approx $16/hr. After searching for several months without success my husband and I are frustrated and disappointed. The only place that we have found in our price range smelled like cat urine (no wonder they allow pets). It seems absurd to my husband and I that two hard working people making a decent wage cannot find an affordable place to live. Read More

Nice place - 1/4/2006
I grew up in nearby Quincy, but I worked in Boston for a period. Overall a good town, plenty to do, see, etc. Had I had a few more dollars I would have stayed in Boston and moved into the Back Bay neighborhood, with its traditional brownstones and such. I ended up leaving for Philadelphia (I know, but I had to go) and I sorely miss Boston. My only gripes are the cost of living and an extremely liberal culture second only to the likes of San Read More
