The city is overrated - 9/2/2007
The city is overrated. Native TC residents don't care for new-comers and are pretty close-minded. The place is sort of a suburbia sprawl with a bunch of Target, Best Buys and other chain-store boxes around.

I was born in the Minneapolis area, and let me tell you after living in the following:
Atlanta, Phenoix, Playa Del Carmen, Mexico, and now Miami - there is no place like it!
If I could I would move back in a min - never thought I would say that, but with the new development in Uptown - there is not another city that can touch it, other then maybe Seattle - but I have only visited

I have been in Minneapolis for well over a year. Don't like it.
People here are very surface. If you didn't grow up here, than locals treat you like an outsider. I can always tell if someone is from MN - typically will be nice but won't let you completely in, are sheltered (typically don't travel outside of MN too often b/c don't ya know MN is the center of the universe). If I hear 1 more time how superior the state is I will scream.

In my opinion, Minneapolis is a great place to live, and I moved here from a small town in Ohio a little more than 11 years ago. It's not a cheap city to live in, it has crime and it has traffic congestion. But all of these aspects of city life can be viewed in the positive OR negative just depending on (a) your attitude, and (b) how many other cities you've experienced. And I don't mean as a tourist.
The city is not a cheap place to live, but I believe you get what you pay for here. Minneapolis has an extensive network of parks, lakes, and trails that any other city would be hard-pressed to match. It has slightly better-than-average shopping, a vibrant downtown no matter what day or time of day (unlike other cities that die at 5pm), and lots of great restaurants. Entertainment is almost limitless because in the winter there's nothing else to do (lol) and in the summer everyone's dying to get outside. There are so many summer festivals they have a hard time fitting

I don't know a whole lot about Minneapolis, but I can tell you lots about Denver. Denver is much more conservative than Minneapolis. You'll find much more cultural opportunities in Minneapolis, too. Denver tries to be artsy but it is just so out of joint from the fundamental cowtownness of the city.
Education is much more strongly supported in Minnesota than Colorado. Teacher pay is very low here and Colorado is very charter and home school focused.
I don't know what else you're looking for, but it looks like Minneapolis may be your best

Minnesota is a beautiful state, and has plenty of things to see and do.
The same goes for Minneapolis, but when it comes to housing if you Do Not have a lot of money and are able bodied you're out of luck. Being disabled, on a very fixed income, and have a dependant, there is not enough "afordable" universally designed housing to go around. Renting a room doesn't work. The sad thing is, that Minneapolis is not alone in this situation, it's everywhere. No matter where you try to live, you will be faced with the same housing

Tracey left a posting on 6/5 - not sure if Tracey will see this, but I'm looking for info/comparison on Denver & Mpls. I have visited Mpls many times, so I'm comfortable in my knowledge of the area, but I'm interested in comparing it with Denver. In your opinion, which is a better city to live? My husband and I love arts/theater/culture/sports, want to live in a big city w/major airport and great education system (pay/job openings) - my husband's a teacher. We've been impressed with the arts/culture and quality and pay scale of teaching jobs in Mpls, but found limited openings in teaching positions. Is this typical? What's Denver's status on education? Any input you have, or anyone else reading this who's knowledgeable on the subject, would be greatly appreciated.
