Living with wildfires - 8/29/2006
In parts of town where there are signs posted promoting www.livingwithfire.org one might think twice. Since moving here from the east coast 2 years ago we have experienced one fire (8,000 sq feet - largest in history) burning our entire view to the left. And this year a fire burning our view behind us. It's a very scary thing being evacuated for fire and watching it burn. Unlike anything we were used to. The govt does a great job trying to replant, but it will take years to regrow that beautiful view and by then i expect there will be another fire. Reno has many fires as well. Dozens each year. Not to mention living in the valley (or canyons) after fire season is over if too much has burnt (make sure you have "Defensible space" around your house) then you have to prepare for mud slides as the brush is gone and the mountain snow melts and runs
