OKC Great Place to live - 2/28/2007
I was born and raised in Oklahoma. I moved to OKC after graduating from college and like a lot of people who live there I just wanted to move....get out...be in a bigger place. Get out of the time warp! Well...my fam and I had an opp to move to Dallas. Teaching in Dallas (North Dallas) touts big pay....lots of business booming...better place to live. We have been here for 3 years. Yes...there are some big differences...but I have missed OKC on a reg basis. OKC is big enough to be a "city" and have an Urban feel...but...small enough you can live there in the city. As far as teaching in Texas...watch out. I hated it....can you say "RED TAPE"...I spent so much of my time just doing paper work it was hard to find time to teach...well they have that problem solved too!! My district spells out EXACTLY what you are allowed to teach on a daily basis!!!! Literally...and had the principal walking by the doors to listen in to see if teachers were doing it! O you may make more....but child care

Some economic news for Okies!! - 1/27/2007
The cost of living is about 40% less then the Los Angeles area (sorry, no beaches here but quite a few lakes!!). The Oklahoma City area is experiencing a housing appreciation of almost 5% per year. Tulsa is slightly less. Dell Computers has built a three-phase campus for an inbound call center. Many reps start at around $16.00 per hr. Housing is still very affordable here. New houses
1800-2500 sq ft start in the $120,000 to $160,000 range. Gas prices are among the lowest in the country. As of this writing(Jan./'07) unleaded is $1.76-1.89 a

The whole state is worthless! - 9/14/2006
I agree with you James. Oklahoma in general has nothing to offer someone who is educated and desires a good job and cultural emenities. I've lived in Seattle, Denver, Phoenix and many other places. I've found that Oklahoma's policy is to let religion and money control all the decisions. They don't want the best people for jobs here. They want the bare minimum and pay according to those needs. The weather is not as bad as I had envisioned. Not too hot or too cold. A good mixture of both. People are overall fairly friendly. More so if your a regular church going, ultra-conservative republican with a pickup truck. I hate to say it. But it's very true. This place simply

great place but state in a time warp - 8/20/2006
I've lived in the OKC area for 3 years and I'm wandering whether the move here was worth it (lived in TX for 4 yrs; Tulsa before that). First the good. Living costs and housing are low, easy to get around. Unfortunately no hills. Downtown showing signs of life. The BAD, it is one of the dirtiest cities I ever seen. Trash can be seen along the highways and some streets. Speaking of roads and highways it is one of the worst in the nation. Job market SUCKS; a few companies like GM, and Dayton tires have laid off workers, and some like kerr-magee are leaving the state. Not a good place if you are under 40 and single. And no culture what so ever. Mass transit isn't good. Oh, but it gets better. The state income tax rate is 6.25%. The tax system in this state is so BAD that even the poor and the retired are taxed to death. If you are buying a car, be prepared to pay $800 or more dollars to get your tag. Toll roads are all over the state. Sales taxes in OKC is around 8.375% which includes

weather - 8/9/2006
I believe that we have the best weather anywhere in the south. We go through all of the seasons, but we barely touch on winter. The spring and fall months are the best. We have many days in October through November and in late March through June where it is in the lower to mid 70s. The winters can be cold around January and February, but we rarely ever see tempertures below 50 and snow is rare. The summers are very hot in mid July through the first of September, but it is nothing compared to what our neighbors in Texas experience. I would say that the weather is great in every month except for July and

OKC is growing - 7/19/2006
I just recently read that OKC has purchased the Seatle Sonics. The Bricktown area is really booming downtown, and with a professional sports team moving in we can only expect the area to grow even more. Anyone can find something to do in this city and everyone knows "Okies" are the friendliest folks around. I would recommend this city to everyone except die hard liberals because we are mostly a very red
