rain rain - 3/24/2009
This is mostly a rainy city it rains the majority of the time. Although I do like the fact that we do have definite seasons here. I here that there are some places where it is really one extreme or another and maybe about 2-3 weeks of mild weather. Eugene has a full range of all the four

Local economy - 3/24/2009
Overall I think that the economy is ok here. At the time of this writing the unemployment is about 12%. I feel that the economy here is mostly small businesses and nick nack shops like soap vendors and home made jewelry ect. Eugene is not very conducive to big businesses being here. There were several attempts to have them come to our city but the city counsel said that they don't feel that they would fit in and imposed many stringent regulations on them. This is one of the reasons why there are two very large vacant pits in downtown where water and trash sits. I was talking with one of my good friends who is getting his MBA and he is running into this sort of problem (depending on who you are) where he is over qualified to work at many of the employers in Eugene. That is really the only draw back to the economy here. Although, the community of the businesses that are here is very close nit which is uncommon in most others. I think that Eugene will grow a lot but I only see it growing

A University Town - 2/4/2009
The Eugene area is a great place to live if you like outdoor recreations. We are 45 minutes from the beach. About an hour from skiing. A lot of fishing and camping opportunities. The town itself has great shopping and intertainment through the Hult Center and other venues. However, Eugene is very liberal. We had a cross on a hill that had been there many years to commemorate WWII vets. It was removed a few years ago because some people were offended by it. Another liberal move of our City Councel (joke) was a ban on Christmas trees in businesses within city limits. Half the town are old hippies, the other half are yuppies. We have a high crime rate, but you would never know it because the one and only newspaper do not publish most of the crime. Nor does the local news. Trying to portray a picture perfect college town. We also have problems with some corrupt police agencies. ( I know this because I was married to an officer). We also have many homeless, and I expect it to get worse

Conservatives Beware! - 11/13/2008
Eugene is great if you're a transgendered person, transvestite, gay, an extreme feminist, like doing meth and/or living off the state, or just extrememly liberal. If you have a western religion or conservative values, THIS IS NOT THE PLACE FOR YOU. Also, if you are looking to have a career in law enforcement, this is really not the place to go. The one good thing I can say about Eugene is that it is beautiful in the fall. But then, lots of places

Population inaccuracy? - 6/26/2008
I am 99.9% sure that Eugene has way more than 39,000 people, which is the number your site has listed as our population. The little "Welcome to Eugene" signs posted about our city's borders claim that we have more like 139,000 people. A typo,

climate - 5/31/2008
Eugene is a very green town, environmentally as well as aesthetically. The climate here is very moderate. It does get some snow once in a great while, but not much and winter can see temps in the 20s, but never lasting too long. Fall and spring here are beautiful. Fall is very colorful and will rival the New England states in color because of the kinds of trees and folliage that grow here. Very mild Fall and Spring and Summers are warm and sometimes hot, or over 100 degrees. Rainfall is usually between 60-70in.per year, so not too bad. Very comfortable climate

Comparison Pacific NW to Southern CA - 5/14/2008
Climate: Eugene's climate is milder than the east coast, but colder and rainier than the southwest U.S. Eugene is only about an hour from the ocean -that beach is less populated or developed, but cold. Summers are hot and dry, for the most part.
Economy: The lower salaries, depending on profession, are pretty much in line with the lower priced housing and overall cost of living. Gas prices are up above the national average. Some say property tax is high. But there is no sales tax.
People: Majority are hippies, mixed with college students attending the University of Oregon, and a small population of upper class professionals. It is not as crowded here, there isn't the traffic (I-5 is 2-3 lanes through most of Oregon, until you hit Portland).

Eugene suffers from an anti-business attitude - 5/11/2008
Eugene has done more to support business expansion in its sister city across the river, Springfield. Many businesses report difficulty expanding in Eugene due to availability of land and endless bureaucratic restrictions. I am personally aware of a solar panel manfacturer who wanted to relocate here but was unable to find suitable

Quality down as public safety declines, potholes g - 5/11/2008
Eugene is legendary for its quality of life and recreational opportunities. It is blessed with a geography between mountains and coast that support endless recreational pursuits. Added to this is the exciting life of a major PAC-10 conference school, the University of Oregon.
All this is in jeopardy as the federal government continues to disinvest in its over 100 year commitment to pay in-lieu-of taxes for their timber lands and a distrust of local city council & government grows as they can't seem to patch potholes or keep felons in jail. Reductions in federal funding are forcing huge layoffs of county jail and sherrif's patrols. The City has a backlog of street repairs in the ten's of millions that it can't pay for and a segment of the population would simply like to lock up Eugene and tell those wanting to move here to go away.
Fortunately there is an option. Across the river Eugene's alter ego is Springfield, a City that is managing to build a new jail,
