What BestPlaces Users Say about Portland
Portland, Oregon is a dynamic city known for its vibrant arts scene, outdoor recreation opportunities, and progressive culture. It has a population of over 600,000 people and is consistently ranked as one of the best cities to live in the United States. With such high praise, it's no surprise that many people have chosen to make Portland their home. To get a better understanding of what it's like to live in this city, I have included summaries of user reviews from BestPlaces.net.
According to a review from "Mark," Portland is "a city that truly lives up to its reputation." He goes on to mention the city's charm, friendly residents, and abundance of coffee shops and microbreweries. Another user, "Samantha," agrees, stating that Portland is "a dream city for anyone who loves nature and outdoor activities." She also highlights the city's food scene and bustling downtown.
However, not all reviews are glowing. A user named "Jonathan" mentions that while he loves the city's culture and opportunities, the high cost of living can be a challenge. He also points out the growing issue of homelessness in certain areas of the city. Similarly, "Jessica" mentions that the traffic and commute times in Portland can be a downside, although she still enjoys living there overall.
In summary, it's clear that Portland has a lot to offer, from its unique culture to its beautiful outdoor spaces. While some reviewers mention challenges such as high costs and traffic, the majority of users are happy with their decision to live in this dynamic and diverse city. As "Mark" puts it, "Portland truly is a gem in the Pacific Northwest."

House Prices Over Inflated, Traffic Jams Everywher - 8/2/2006
House prices are shooting up so much in Porltand, pushing families out into the suburbs into ugly cookie cutter housing developments.... and forcing people to drive in long commutes to work...impatience overcomes many who are willing to risk their lives to get to work on time. It is

The weather stinks! - 7/20/2006
Portland and Oregon are actually very nice places to live. The only problem is the weather. If you're originally from somewhere sunny, like I am, you'll have a hard time here during the 9 months of dreary, rainy, gray winter. I'm looking to leave and move to sunnier climes.
The people in Portland are very ecological minded and Portland always tops the lists for recycling and urban planning and public transportation, which is

Oregone - 7/12/2006
Have lived in Portland since 1963, minus two years in the military, and I can't wait to leave when I retire next year. If you are a pro gay marriage, bicycle riding, latte drinking, sandal wearing liberal, then Portland is for you. As for me, and I voted for Kerry, mind you, so I'm not some right-wing neo-con, I just can't cope with the the rain and the leftist politics anymore. The voters will vote for any and all tax increases that are placed on the ballot. As for the rain, and rain is a four letter word, it seems to rain almost every day during the spring, fall & winter. I love to go to college baseball games but you can never count on the weather cooperating. Am planning to move to California to get away from this depressing

sick of LA, thinkin about movin to Portland - 7/12/2006
I am very sick of LA, the traffic is just literaly unbearable, it gets worse not year after year, but month after month. The congestion, pollution, the impossibility to afford a home ( in a decent neighbourhood the cheapest shack is $700000), all of this really made me consider moving to Portland. I don't mind the rain that much, it sounds like the public transportation system is excellent and it looks like u can still buy a real nice 2 bdr condo for about $150000. Am I missing anything..? If I am, please, let me know. I already have tickets and I'm coming to visit and check it out on the 27th of this month. Anyone need anything from LA? :-) Ron, Los

great for families - 7/12/2006
I have lived in the Portland area for about 5 years. We started out in the suburbs and moved into town 2 years ago. Within inner north east and southeast Portland there are wonderful community oriented neighborhoods with lots of young children. Small local businesses are all over the place. Houses are full of character. People are very friendly. There are lots of cultural events going on. The city itself tries to support sustainable development, control sprawl, and promote community. We love Portland. The only exception for us is the rainy dreary weather which can linger on into springtime. If it wasn't for that I think Portland has to be one of the best cities in the country. (I have lived in and visited many places.) We have really wonderful families living all around us. We find the suburbs to be full of strip malls, big chain stores, and tract house developments. We love the city of Portland itself, and would never choose a suburb over Portland

Its always what you make of it - 7/12/2006
I think my title says it best. I have also lived on the West and East coast and I miss Portland more than any place I have lived. I do not miss the constant rain but I miss the beauty, the culture, the community and the people. I have lived in California, Oregon (Portland), Texas and New Hampshire.. hands down Oregon was the most beautiful and cultural. It had the most to offer in things to do, places to see and events to go to. However, moving so much has taught me that ease of living is all in the attitude you bring to the table. I have had a terrible time adjusting to the East Coast and I have recently discovered its mostly due to my attitude toward the people I have met here. Yes, they are different that what I am used to and possibly from what I expected, but its unrealistic expectations that disappoint us and the attitude we bring either fosters that or changes it.
Portland is great! I miss it and I would go back in a heartbeat but as a mother I would NOT

Portland one of the top 5 best US cities period. - 6/29/2006
I have lived in NYC, SF, Hartford, CT and also visited Seattle, Detroit, Miami, LA, Chicago, Dallas, SA, Houston, Philly, DC, Baltimore, Boston. The only places that can compete are SF, Chicago, NYC and maybe Seattle. Yes Portland has a lot of days with precipitation, but significantly less than say anywhere in NY, CT, or Massachusetts or Florida. It's a very light misty rain, and it will get cloudy a lot during the winter months. However,it's not for 9 months like some want you to believe. And during winter the temps are mild, not blistering cold like the east and midwest and summer is generally not blistering hot like phoenix and the east and midwest. It's green year round and don't give me that 4 seasons crap because I've experienced it many times and it's not all that....then a few weeks later you're in zero degree temps and hating it. If you're looking for a city like Auckland, NZ or Melbourne, Australia then Portland is the most similar of any US city period. If you're into
