Not Easy Finding a Career Here - 5/24/2006
Don’t fool yourself, Portland is no place to look for a professional job. Primarily, I'm writing to degree holder's seeking good pay & benefits. I'm not trying to discourage anyone, but the realities are clear. Let me present the scenario…I'm a Government employee with over 8 years of hands on experience and 2 college degree's. I'm young (under 30) and have loads of potential to offer a new employer. So it should be fairly easy for me to find a decent job, right? I wish. Portland has limited positions available in almost any field (except medicine). Moreover, when a random job vacancy does exist (because the previous guy either died or relocated to a warmer state), the position is gobbled up by the countless others with "connections". Yeah, I think I'm going to move, there's just no chance for upward movement

No Sterotypes or Ridicule...Just an Honest Guy's O - 5/16/2006
If you're remotely considering calling Portland your home, check out this posting. My wife and I moved here to accept a great job offer after we graduated from college back in 2004. We actually don’t live in the city (by choice) but commute there every day. The Portland metropolitan area has some great housing that maintains the suburban feel but keeps you close to the amenities of the big city. Albeit, the housing market has risen significantly in the two years we've lived here, but buyers with good credit and some extra cash can still find decent deals close to the city.
DISCOURAGING WEATHER:
Despite the highpoints of the area, Portland has major factors that are discouraging. Summer is gorgeous here, but summer only last 3 months. The rest of the year is generally cloudy with periods of relentless rain. If you’re a stay at home mom or dad, it can promote depression…you can never take little Jimmy and his sister Sally to the park because it's ALWAYS gloomy,

I am looking to relocate. I currently live in St. Louis, MO. Looking to move to a liberal place. How's the job market, especially in the insurance field? Plus, how is the singles market, especially in terms of finding single childless females 25 and

Portland is awful but Tigard is much, much worse! - 5/4/2006
Tigard has all of the nasty weather (9 months rain, 3 months unbearable heat - note that Oregonians are pasty faced and pudgy due to the lousy weather chasing everyone inside 99% of the time) and none of the ammenities of Portland.
Tigard has the out-of-control children growing up sociopathic with their incredibly rude, incredibly arrogant parents who think that popping out kids means they are entitled to be absolute pigs to everyone else. As a result, you get to pay taxes to keep kids in school who are vandals, bullies, lazy little brats.
Apparently Portland is 46th (it's campaign season) in education --- what? How is that possible in a supposedly liberal LOL Pacific NW state?
It's possible because, the ugly little secret is that Oregon is actually a backwards red state. Outside of Portland and, perhaps, Eugene the rest of Oregon is bigoted, redneck, ignorant country. It's mostly rural as no one wants to live here unless they'ved failed

Nasty Las Vegans moving to Portland??? - 5/3/2006
Most likely those "nasty" people you are encountering are from Southern California, NOT from Las Vegas!
I am a Las Vegas native and we're moving out of here to get away from the Californians! REAL Las Vegans are nice, albeit a conservative bunch, who are yearning for a sense of community - one thing that natives lost when the Californians invaded Nevada.
So before you lump Las Vegans into the fray of those you believe that are "ruining Portland," just remember that the "Las Vegan" you are describing just may be a native

temperate climate, it's getting EXPENSIVE, though. - 4/28/2006
Lived throughout the U.S., Portland's is one of the better places so far. A LOT of southern Californians and Bay area folks moving in though and really raising property values. I think PDX will become a childless city, like SF, CA, within the next five - ten years. Really unfortunate because there are a lot of cool neighborhoods with good neighbors, nice parks and close by schools. Oh

In response to Amy - 4/27/2006
I find it highly offensive that you take one giant stamp and put it on the South: racist, bigoted, backward? So the whole South, from Maryland to Texas is one big area with people who are racist, bigoted, and backward. You need to emerge from the cave you've been living in since the 1940's and start thinking for yourself. Wake up- there are good and bad people everywhere. I've met plenty of racists in "liberal, educated" NYC and I've met some of the nicest, non-judgemental people ever in the South. And as far as Oregon goes, I lived in Seaside, OR for a few years and found the people to be quite friendly and not at all racist. Its unfortunate that these stereotypes, which are highly racist in themselves, have not gone away. You obviously are a tool of the media, which unfairly portrays Southerners as toothless rednecks. You're pathetic. I can see why you can't make friends

Portland and Tigard Oregon: the worst places in th - 4/26/2006
Portland, Oregon and especially its suburb of Tigard, Oregon are the worst places I've ever lived in or even visited for any length of time. The climate is horrendous. The 9 months of constant gray, drizzle and damp is terrible for your psyche and it makes Oregonians insular, unwelcoming and the coldest people I've ever met. It also makes people overeat, become depressed and commit suicide and not necessarily in that order.
The 3 months of intense heat and dust are the flipside to the 9 months of rain. The heat quickly becomes unbearable as there seems to be no filter on the sun. As a result, most Oregonians spend little or no time outside even in the summer because the sun and heat are as harsh as the rain and damp.
There is a reason that Oregon has such a small population for such a large state. It is an intensely depressing place to live.
People will chat about the green that comes from the constant rain but there are plenty of
