What BestPlaces Users Say about Portland

Portland, Oregon is a dynamic city known for its vibrant arts scene, outdoor recreation opportunities, and progressive culture. It has a population of over 600,000 people and is consistently ranked as one of the best cities to live in the United States. With such high praise, it's no surprise that many people have chosen to make Portland their home. To get a better understanding of what it's like to live in this city, I have included summaries of user reviews from BestPlaces.net.

According to a review from "Mark," Portland is "a city that truly lives up to its reputation." He goes on to mention the city's charm, friendly residents, and abundance of coffee shops and microbreweries. Another user, "Samantha," agrees, stating that Portland is "a dream city for anyone who loves nature and outdoor activities." She also highlights the city's food scene and bustling downtown.

However, not all reviews are glowing. A user named "Jonathan" mentions that while he loves the city's culture and opportunities, the high cost of living can be a challenge. He also points out the growing issue of homelessness in certain areas of the city. Similarly, "Jessica" mentions that the traffic and commute times in Portland can be a downside, although she still enjoys living there overall.

In summary, it's clear that Portland has a lot to offer, from its unique culture to its beautiful outdoor spaces. While some reviewers mention challenges such as high costs and traffic, the majority of users are happy with their decision to live in this dynamic and diverse city. As "Mark" puts it, "Portland truly is a gem in the Pacific Northwest."

Small town city - 2/7/2006
I've lived in the NW for a while and if there is anyone tired of large city congestion and attitudes, Portland is the place to be.

Sure it might rain a bunch during the winter though I can't think of any other place to live during the summer, absolutely gorgeous and mild.

If your an outdoor enthusiast, I need not explain why Portland is a great place to live...lots of stuff to do!

So yeah, move to Portland, it's a cool place.

Portland good for youthful complexion !! - 1/30/2006

We have had about 2 days of sun in the past 2 months !!! No worries about sun related aging. It rains so much people wear diving masks on their way to work !! And how about half a million for a concrete and steel box downtown ?? Complete with a balcony the size of a phone booth !! Dogs have their own bedrooms and refuse handouts from strangers. Lots of lovely street art and progressive thinkers. Home of the nose ring. Alternative paradise......love it,,,,love it......yeah....the is the place Read More

Portland sucks - 1/26/2006
Portland is not great at all, especially the HIDEOUS showers that take place most of the year. The summers are awful, two months of sunshine at most. I've lived here practically all my life and CAN'T WAIT to get out. This is a good place for outdoorsy people who don't like to dress up to go out. And the housing prices have shot up, unreasonable for an unimportant town like Portland. The worst part of it all though, is how liberal it is. I can't imagine Boston being more liberal than Portland. I go to PSU, and all the professors and students will tear you up if you're not liberal. EVERYTHING is Read More

Portland inquiry... - 1/26/2006
I am considering taking a job transfer to Portland, and I've heard only good things about the city... but I haven't heard anything about the single's scene. If anyone has feedback on this aspect of the city, please reply. Thanks, Mark Kansas Read More

Not what it used to be - 1/23/2006
I have lived in Portland nearly all my life. I have watched it change from a unique small city into a mini-New York. This used to be a place where trends were virtually ignored and people were original, and now everybody is jumping someone else's train. The housing is getting so ridiculous that I will likely not be able to buy a house here. I guess I will trade places with the Californians who bought a good percentage of the real estate here, and drove housing prices up. At least the weather is nice Read More

If you are a nature lover, you will LOVE Portland! - 1/13/2006
I think that Portland is a beautiful city. But, what I really, REALLY, dislike is that a ton of people from California etc are moving up here. It's pretty disapointing, because on the SW side at least, a ton of new ugly houses are being built. But, do not worry, because other areas of Portland are still gorgeous. One of the things that is awesome about Portland, for all of you nature lovers out there, is that it's surrounded by a beautiful Forest and if you go up to the North side, there's also the gorgeous Columbia River! What else is good, again, if you're a nature lover- is the breath taking Columbia Gorge and Muthnomah Falls, which is just about a 30 minute drive from Portland. These are the reasons that I love Portland. Hopefully, it'll stay beautiful like this Read More

UNBEAUTIFUL? - 1/13/2006
so i lived in portland till i was 13, moved to cincinnati, oh (come here for unbeautiful) and have traveled all over the US and have seen many cities, and Portland still sits at the top of the list for beautiful cities. i dont know of many other cities that can boast two mountains visible in the skyline, but that says something. the artistic side of portland is very evident with a simple walk around downtown. how about the public parks? try cathedral park in north portland, or washington park INTERNATIONAL ROSE GARDEN! HOW ABOUT THE JAPANESE GARDEN? did you notice the two rivers? where was this guy hanging out?? also, to the guy that was talking about all the transplants, where did you live before 1989? a transplant is a transplant, no matter how long they've been Read More

A Charming city - 12/23/2005
i don't know why the last user says this is such an unbeautiful city.
It has a decent skyline, esp. against the Wilamette River, that has some very traditional, european-pretty architecture mixed in with some modern styles. Eclectic like the city vibe. I agree very much that for a major city, Portland has a charming "town" feeling. it's so easy to get around and a comfortable city to adapt to.
The bldgs aren't tall, but that's because the city is adamant in keeping the view of Mt Hood clearly Read More
