What BestPlaces Users Say about Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is a bustling city located in the western part of the state. With a rich history and diverse culture, Pittsburgh attracts many residents from all over the country. In this particular place, there are a variety of neighborhoods and communities that offer unique experiences for those who call it home. To get a better understanding of what it's like to live in Pittsburgh, we will be summarizing several user reviews from BestPlaces.net. These reviews come from individuals who have first-hand experience living in the city and can provide valuable insights for those considering making Pittsburgh their home.

1. In their review, Susan R. describes Pittsburgh as "a hidden gem" with "tons of character." They go on to praise the city's affordable cost of living, saying "I can afford a nice house in a safe and quiet neighborhood without breaking the bank." Susan also mentions the abundance of outdoor activities and cultural events that make the city a great place to live.

2. James S. shares a similar sentiment, stating that Pittsburgh has "a unique charm that is hard to find in other cities." He also mentions the strong sense of community and friendly neighbors as major positives. However, James does note that traffic can be an issue, especially during rush hour.

3. According to John P., Pittsburgh is a "city of endless opportunities." He highlights the job market, education options, and entertainment as major draws for him and his family. John also appreciates the city's efforts in revitalizing its downtown area, making it a more vibrant and livable place.

4. In contrast, Emma L. expresses some disappointment with Pittsburgh, saying that it "lacks diversity and can feel very insular." She also mentions the weather, noting that winters can be long and harsh. However, Emma does acknowledge that the city has a "small-town feel" and is a good place to raise a family.

Overall, it seems that Pittsburgh offers a unique combination of affordability, community, and opportunities for its residents. While there may be some challenges, such as traffic and weather, many reviewers found the city to be a great place to live and would recommend it to others.

I have two kids, 4 and 7, and Pittsburgh's a great place for many kid-friendly activities, including a very good Science Center and the best dinosaur exhibit anywhere in the Read More

I can't wait to leave this dump! - 12/31/2009
I was born and raised in this backward, dreary, sorry excuse for a city, and will be moving very soon! All people care about are sports and drinking here. You cannot go more than 5 minutes without a sports update on any Pittsburgh media outlet, even in the off-seasons. And if you don't care about sports, you are considered crazy and will be ridiculed by other Pittsburghers. There is a real lack of any type of culture. The "cultural district" consists of one block! There is nothing for young people to do. The weather is miserable, even in the summer. In other cities, "downtown" is where to go, but if you do not work in downtown Pittsburgh, there is no reason for you to be there. It turns into a ghost town at 5:30pm. Our downtown is full of junk shops and boarded up buildings. I have no idea how this place got the title "most liveable city". It's depressing! I strongly encourage anyone thinking about moving here to reconsider! This is not a real Read More

New York, NY vs. Pittsburgh, PA - 9/18/2009
There was a comment made that Pittsburgh has a "way lower crime rate" than most cities of it's size. Did you look at New York City? Using this website data, NYC, which has a population of over 8 million people, has a lower crime rate than Pittsburgh, in both violent and property crimes. Pittsburgh scored a 7/10 and a 7/10 on both catagories. NYC scored a 6/10 for violent crimes and a 5/10 for property. While still above the national average, these scores are still lower that Read More

City of Champions - 8/11/2009
Lots of activities and great sports teams. (less the Pirates, of course) The weather could be better (mostly cloudy) but very few natural disasters (Tornadoes, Floods etc.) Cost of living is about average for the U.S. but going up due to the taxation. Pennsylvania does not tax pension income but do tax EVERYTHING ELSE! Winters are long (Mid-October to Mid-March) Crime is high but only in certain areas. Most neighborhoods are very Read More

Student Housing - 7/29/2009
Housing for most of the University of Pittsburgh's and Carnegie Mellon University's undergraduate students is located in the Oakland and Squirrel Hill neighborhoods, respectively. I would estimate most of these are leased houses with 3-6 occupants with monthly costs ranging 500-1000 dollars before utilities. Houses in Oakland are packed tightly together - some are duplexes. Squirrel Hill offers a bit more space but usually with higher costs. Many apartments are also available in the Shadyside Read More

My city - 6/7/2009
I live in pittsburgh, it's an ok place to live for the moment but I'd rather be in a county that can provide more resources for children. Somewhere that has more educational opportunities with a higher success rate. They have been laying teacher's off and closing schools left and right. I don't know if I can stay long enough to see the end result of it Read More

Big difference from NY or DC - 5/30/2009
Your money will go a longer way in Pittsburgh. You can find a lot of the things you are used to in the big city and more! However, I have to say that I'm too much a Big City (formerly a NY lifer). The transition was rough especially during the winter months. However, its beautiful during the summer.

I wish there was a clear and defined middle class. It seems to go from low income class to higher income class. A new person to Pittsburgh may feel that immediately and wonder where they fit in.

I am not a STEELERS fan. I respect the STEELERS and the fan base in Pittsburgh. Football is a religion in the city of Three Rivers. So, be ready to Read More
