Should I move? - 5/5/2006
HELP!I am a single mother of a 10 month old considering a move to Dallas. But after reading some of the comments on Dallas and Houston, I am wondering if I need to look towards Atlanta instead. I currently live in Orlando and it is EXTREMELY expensive here. Houses are selling in old, ugly, crime infested areas for over $200,000 and anything decent, less than 10 years old is over $350,000, even for a little 3/2. Pay sucks, so I started looking at Dallas and Houston. Houses are way cheaper and there seems to be more to do, in terms of musuems, etc. But after reading some of the comments, its looking scary. Crime here isn't great, the first 10 minutes on the news here is full of murder, carjacking, etc, like any city. Teacher pay is low and childcare is high. Would Dallas or Houston be a better place for a single mom? Heat I can deal with, you can't get more bugs and cockroaches than here in sunny, humid Florida, but I don't want more crime and worse schools. Any advice would be Read More

Dallas - 4/7/2006
My Brother and his wife have lived in Dallas for about 15 years now. They love it!!! They recently had a family tragedy (loss of their 8 year old son) and their community rallied around them with such a show of support that we were all overwhelmed. The climate is great (hot in the summer, but it IS Texas). Affordable housing, plenty of jobs, good educational system. Definitely a good place for Read More

If you like fake, plastic, backstabbing, "pretend" - 3/4/2006
Over 20 years ago, I had a really great job offer in Dallas. I moved from Chicago to Houston instead. Why? A church on every other corner told me I would be surrounded by fake religiousness. Was I right? You bet I was. Dallasites are plastic, two-faced (read others comments on the smiling in your face/stabbing you in the back people there), Yankee hating people (and we are talking 2 pieced pinstriped suit guys and not just the rednecks). After all, the clothing Merchandise Mart is in Dallas, they are $8 an hour employees there wearing their Gucci--and, believe it or not, they actually believe they are somebody! Jobwise, Dallas might have been better but at white price? Go to Fort Worth instead and live if you have to be in this part of the State. Cowboys are more honest than these phonies in Dallas. I have personal experience with the acting like they are your friend and aren't really.
I got stuck in hot, sweaty, unfriendly Houston--but, at least, this blue collar Read More
