Good/ Bad - 1/8/2010
Palestine has a lot of great open land around town. Population hovers around 18,000+. Commuting is never backed up, nor is it along drive. Just about everybody knows each other or knows somebody that knows somebody. The down side is there is not much for the youth to do. There is a YMCA, movie theatre, an arcade/ go-karts, city park. Hunting, fishing, boating, biking, and camping are easily accessable and plentiful. We have 4 major lakes within a 1 hour drive, well over a couple-hundred thousand acres of state land, We have a historical Railroad that runs today called The Texas State Railroad. The train is authentic. Areas we lack in we make up with others ten fold. I grew up here and I love my town and county for that Read More

A Breath of Fresh Air - 10/12/2009
After living in the frigid Northwest of the united states, and traveling all over the world with the United States Army, My family and I were ready to find a good place to settle down for a while. On of my family members mentioned this place called Palestine Texas. At first, I was not up for the idea of living in Texas because of the stereotypical references made commonly about the state. I thought it would be a dry, arid, hot inviornment. I thought many things, and none of them were good however, I gave it the benefit of the doubt and decided to investigate what my family had told me. Do my delight, I descovered that there is a msaaivly high concentration of historic homes in palestine. There is 53 churched for a population of between 18-20k. There is adequate grocery stores, its not too hot (in fact its perfect and the grass is greener than any other place I have ever lived). To make this ever expanding story shorter, my wife and I found our place in the world, and have never Read More

Moved here in 1992 for a nice place to raise children. Came from a big town and there were adjustments. There are more churches than bars, you DO get to know your neighbors, and you learn not to talk about anyone, cause the person you're talking to is either a buddy or related to the one you're talking about. Some of the old people shouldn't be driving anymore, some of the young ones shouldn't have started, but if you are at a light, look around and wave. Chances are you know someone. Since there is no night life, the people hanging out after dark could be finding something better to do, but if you must shop the malls and don't know that home cooking beats all, Tyler is only 45 minutes away and Dallas a meer 2 hours through some really pretty country. (And if conservative is scarry to you, go on and leave, cause you terrify me.... I really hate what you've done in California and New Read More

Highly Recommed! - 7/27/2009
We have lived in Palestine for more than two years and we love it. We bought an historic home needing repairs and upgrades. We are retired and are doing most of the work ourselves. We have found the people here to be quite friendly and there is a wonderful resource for information regarding the restoration of our home in the city's Historic Preservation Officer. There is an incredible amount of interesting history here and the public library is the best I have experienced in a town of this size. The librarian has made it an outstanding venue for cultural and social programs. The shopping here is definitly limited, but we find our needs are met and Tyler is less than an hour away and Dallas is less than two hours. We feel more at home here than any place we have lived during our married Read More

Don't recommend - 6/27/2009
We lived in Palestine for 9 years & would never move back!!!
If you are not related to "everyone" there you are an outsider & not welcome!
Crime is rampant.
To survive you must either work for the prisons, railroad or Walmarts.
Not a pleasant place to Read More

a town of dogwoods - 10/22/2007
about the only thing going for this place is the dogwoods in the spring and the "Tyler roses" on up the road! The biggest thing to ever hit Palestine was the Wal-mart distribution center. Rednecks galore and the dressed up word, conservative, which is just a nice word for "narrow minded." Believe me, you don't want to end up here and if you were born there, you're probably already gone if you're old enough to work and/or drive. Outsiders not Read More
