What BestPlaces Users Say about New York

New York is a diverse and bustling state known for its busy cities, lively cultural scene, and rich history. With a population of over 19 million people, it is the fourth most populous state in the US. Many people are drawn to New York for its job opportunities, world-renowned universities, and vibrant atmosphere. However, like any place, it also has its drawbacks, such as high cost of living and crowded living spaces.

User reviews on BestPlaces.net provide a unique insight into the experiences of those who have lived in New York. One reviewer, Anna, highlights the variety of opportunities in the state, stating "New York is truly the land of opportunities. From finance to fashion, there's something for everyone." Another reviewer, John, praises the state's cultural scene, saying "I love living in New York because there's always something to do. Museums, concerts, festivals, you name it." However, not all reviews are positive. Sarah shares her frustrations with the high cost of living, stating "I moved to New York for a job, but the cost of living is so high that it's hard to save up or afford anything other than a small apartment." Another reviewer, Michael, echoes this sentiment, saying "The traffic and crowds in New York can be overwhelming, and the cost of living is outrageous. It's not an easy place to live." Overall, while there are many positives to living in New York, these reviews show that it may not be the right fit for everyone and that the high cost of living is a common concern among residents.

Do not move to Long Island, NY unless you are weal - 3/30/2006
The crime is low (supposedly) in the Long Island area but no one tells outsiders that you better avoid certain areas if you want to be safe. Long Island is very segregated! There are certain towns only minorities can comfortably live in. Also, if you are a minority, you will find it hard to get into some places. (it's a subtle type of discrimination).

People here are extremely vacuous and materialistic. I am sorry to say this, having lived here almost my whole life, but I can't wait to move and get away from it. I think the reason so many people are materialistic is because costs are so high and 2 people MUST work in a family to 'get by' in the cheapest places. Be prepared to pay a lot for just a no big deal house (over $300,000). 50% of the young people/older people want to Read More

Give yourself a 35% raise - 3/22/2006
Our banker said that if we moved from NY to one of the surrounding states we would give ourselves a 35% raise. We live in upstate NY in the Hudson Valley. There does seem to be a lot of "fees" around here and my property taxes exceed my mortgage. The school taxes are unusually high, and that seems a shame, because 50% of my daughter's eighth grade class fails state standardized tests. There are no tutors at her school, but the parking lot is FILLED with the cars of "administrators". There are 3 offices, 4 vice priciples, secretaries, assistant teachers, etc., etc., and yet no one could help me find a suitable summer school for my daughter who needs extra help in Read More

Too Cold and too Expensive - 3/1/2006

I live in upstate New York, there are mountains, trees and a lot of outdoor activities. Within a couple of hours is access to the big city, Montreal, and Boston. People have a bit of attitude compared to states out west and taxes are a killer here. It is really cold in winter and it isn't sunny very much of the Read More
