What BestPlaces Users Say about New York

New York is a diverse and bustling state known for its busy cities, lively cultural scene, and rich history. With a population of over 19 million people, it is the fourth most populous state in the US. Many people are drawn to New York for its job opportunities, world-renowned universities, and vibrant atmosphere. However, like any place, it also has its drawbacks, such as high cost of living and crowded living spaces.

User reviews on BestPlaces.net provide a unique insight into the experiences of those who have lived in New York. One reviewer, Anna, highlights the variety of opportunities in the state, stating "New York is truly the land of opportunities. From finance to fashion, there's something for everyone." Another reviewer, John, praises the state's cultural scene, saying "I love living in New York because there's always something to do. Museums, concerts, festivals, you name it." However, not all reviews are positive. Sarah shares her frustrations with the high cost of living, stating "I moved to New York for a job, but the cost of living is so high that it's hard to save up or afford anything other than a small apartment." Another reviewer, Michael, echoes this sentiment, saying "The traffic and crowds in New York can be overwhelming, and the cost of living is outrageous. It's not an easy place to live." Overall, while there are many positives to living in New York, these reviews show that it may not be the right fit for everyone and that the high cost of living is a common concern among residents.

The cost of living in New York - 8/9/2011
New York is a Beautiful state in it's landscapes and mountain s and views. However, the cost of living here is out of control. the taxes you pay for what you get are obsurd. You are taxed when you make it, send it save it Etc... School taxes are going up every year and programs and Teachers are being cut. If you are not involved with the PTA with all your free time your child/children will be ignored, there are Police patrolling the school and grounds and the kids are NOT allowed to leave the grounds during school hours to go out for lunch. The property Taxes are insane and all you get is snow plowing when they can get to it. Theree is no town water or sewage, no sidewalks. I am in Dutchess County and I must say the natural mountains, waterways and farms and farmers markets are outstanding. I will not be able to afford to live here when my wife an I retire. Read More

Cannot retire here. - 4/13/2011
Long Island has always been my home. It has become too sodden with overpaid politicians and has lost touch with the people paying the taxes. Balancing the budget, our Governor is happy to have done so and not renewed the surcharge/tax on people who make over $1,000,000.00 per year. The highway and bridges; infrastructure; is breaking down, the income tax is high and the welfare roles are high. Necessary services for the population at large has taken a back seat to services that address English as a second language - not American citizen's, mind you, but folks who are not yet citizens. A blind eye is cast toward the neighborhood problems of the influx on non-citizens into an area. Too many folks in a residence, schooling for transients, hospital care for those who take it and leave the debt behind. Benefits of living here have a sharp division between the wealthy and the destitute as the so-called "middle class" has had to bear the burden of the costs and yet, cannot seem to Read More

living in buffalo - 3/26/2011
I moved to Buffalo about five years ago from long Island. Except the weather everything else is fine. One of the main reasons to move here was the cost factor. you can buy a house for ten thousand dollars and spend another ten or fifteen thousand to renovate it and you are good to go. Back in long Island I paid 1600 rent for a two bedroom apartment. If you do the math that's 19200 per year. I know jobs are scarce in the immediate neighborhood but you can find decent work in the 10-20 mile radius. P.lus, everything is closer. Airport, hospitals, plenty of parks, letchworth state park, and offcourse Niagara falls. If you are a college goer then you have Buffalo university, Buffalo state college, and Erie community college just to name a few. In my neighbor hood, since houses are really cheap, most people own their houses without mortgage so atleast they don't cry like rich folks in affluent neighborhoods.  Read More

Very Bad Reputation. However we built a giant Highway that keeps Snookie and the situation on the otgher side. We have on the north shore a cultural center . Imaging on SI. We also have great universities. We are plaugued by the socialist public schools but have great priovate reasonable however only cathlic if reasonable is to be used. Over here we read draw enjoy the arts and have a fantastic theater program. NYC is also a ferry (free) ride away however we do have a 13.00 bridge but we get a discount as locals. Taxes are very high - 1/14/2011
Where I presently live the taxes are very high and the service level seems to drop every year. The gas prices are among the highest in the US and the weather can be very harsh. Due to this, people are becoming increasingly unfriendly. I retire in approx 4 years and want to find a "better place".  Read More
