Review of Austin, Texas

Moved from Denver, Colorado, what a change!
Star Rating - 3/26/2007
I don't regret one second leaving Denver, Colorado. Austin is beautiful, very lush! I'm sorry, but the mile high dry air was getting to me, so was the crime, housing, infastructure, and peoples attitude. The people here are great. The only problem I've encountered was the traffic, but it wasn't nearly as bad as Denver. The only issue I've heard of here is some of the people who moved here. Ironically, yesterday, while driving, this BMW was going 30 mile an hour over the speed limit cutting through traffic. I pulled up next to him and noticed the California tags. I hope they don't ruin this beautiful city and atmosphere like they did Colorado. Otherwise, I can't complain. Here, you can still afford a house. I'll take the high property taxes any day over a state income tax. Say what you want, but the roads in Texas are much better than Colorado's. Tuition at colleges, is much lower than Colorado's, so is gas, insurance, food, etc. After doing some research and if you factor in all the taxes paid, Texas has a lower burden overall. I love the humidity! My skin, eyes, and hair feels so much better.

I see there are still a lot of ignorant people that blame Californians for all there Cities problems; have these ignoramus ever thought once what drove Californians out of their beautiful State? Is it because they preferred Austin or Boise over the beach? Their 260 days of sunshine and mild climate for humid Texas or snowy Colorado? Or is it that the Asian (Asian means all of Asia i.e. India) drove them out of California by driving the prices and population up? Did you know that the US population is 3rd in the world at 303 million people (4.56% of the World population), China 1st in the World population with 1.324 BILLION (19.86% of the World population), followed by India with 1.134 BILLION (17.01% of the World population). Watch out!!!! Their coming to invade your State too!!!

So it's fine for people from Colorado to move to Austin and add to its growth woes but not Californians? What makes you any different?

Unless you lived in Colorado Springs and Denver, you probably won't understand what this person is talking about with the Californians. I lived in Chicago and the Gulf State most my life, but a few years back, I lived in both places in Colorado. What he is talking about is when a lot of Californian's profited from the real estate boom, they cashed out and moved to places like Colorado Springs and Boise without a job. They had enough money to pay cash for a large downpayment from the equity in their home. It was cheap to them, since few places were as overpriced as CA. Well, once in their new location, a flood of people looking for work, drove down wages since companies can take their pick of whomever they want and pay little. It is easy to find a job, just won't pay anything. I worked in a real estate company and at a bank and heard a lot of stories of locals who just couldn't make it anymore and left. They income versus home prices WAS out of whack, but that is finally being corrected. So, there is some bitterness there I guess. I will say I thought it was hilarious to see some people dressed like they just walked out off of a Hollywood set, getting ready to go rafting and hiking, but whatever. In this guys defense, Coloradoans and Texans (live there twice now) have more of a similar culture than CA.

James, I'm from Texas. Went to school in Denver and am VERY happy to be back! The people, weather, laid back mentality, atmosphere, infastructure, and mentality make me feel home again. Thanks. FYi, thanks jeremy for reiterating my point with precise details. You are absolutely correct. Just think, average typical bungalow shack in California is 500-700k give or take, you sell and buy a house for cash in Austin. What does that do to local prices and attitudes? Chris (from the first posting).
