Review of Austin, Texas

It's all about what you make it...
Star Rating - 9/24/2007
I once referred to Austin as a 'warmer Columbus, OH', but my outlook changed since then. This place has more potential and is growing very fast. A good place to pursue education and find a decent job. This place is on the move and in 5yrs, it won't even look like it does now.
Austin prides itself on two things: UT football and 6th Street. For young single people this can be a party mecca. 6th st. has been rated the top place for partying in men's mags year after year. It is THE spot for revellers. It boasts someting like 200 bars, pubs, and clubs within a 1-mile radius.
For more mature fare, the Warehouse District is literally a block over and up. Nice place to meet attractive people drinking, listening to loud music and looking sexy. lol
BUT ALSO - downtown is family friendly as well with three museums and Zilker park is huge and awesome. AND - there seems to be some kind of festival damn near every month! South by SOuthwest, the Film Fest and ACL are MUST DO EVENTS - if nothing else but for a chance to bump into famous people. So far I've seen Tarantino, Clooney, Tyson Beckford and Lance Armstrong without even trying! You hang around downtown enough you WILL bump into someone famous. Oh, and there is 'Leslie'. (u just have to be here to see)

Aside from that, be prepared to hear 'Hook 'em Horns!' at least 20x a day - whether it is UT football season or not! You are surrounded by burnt orange constantly, and understand that UT won the Championship in 2005; never forget that fact. lol
THere is a TON of stuff to do in Austin. austin360.com is a great website to use. Plenty of eateries with all types of cuisine. Since its either warm or hot year round, outdoor lovers have ample opps to do things. There are two lakes that matter and they are crowded most weekends.
As far as the Texas 'arrogance'; I wouldn't say arrogant as much as extremely proud. (About what, I have no idea.)
The very BEST aspect of living in Austin? - We are located 1hr from San Antonio; 2hr from Houston; and 3hrs from Dallas. That gives plenty to travel and see stuff.
Once they expand these roads to meet the growing demands of this city, everything will be good to go.
PROS: nightlife, economy, culture, education, music, activities, family-friendly
CONS: roads, hot/humid summers, allergy sufferers beware!, gentrification, bad drivers.
