Review of Austin, Texas

Information on the allergy situation, and other to

Hello, my wife and I are in our late 20's with no kids and looking to relocate from Cincinnati to somewhere with a demographic that we fit better in. Austin keeps coming up in our discussions, but we have some questions.

1) what is the allergy situation? I've seen a few posts warning of impending asthma onsets and a need to stay indoors all fall and spring. We both suffer from allergies and have to take prescription meds here in Cincinnati. Are we asking for trouble to move to Austin?

2) Outdoor recreation opportunities? One of the #1 reasons we're looking to leave Cincinnati is the lack of available outdoor activities that appeal to a couple who is young, athletic, and thrill seeking. We'd like to be able to backpack, rock-climb, mountain bike, camp, etc. on the weekends without having to look 8-10 hours away for viable options. I hear that there's an abundance of outdoor opportunities in Austin, but then look at a map and see no major geographical landforms for miles and no major national parks for hundreds of miles...Could someone fill in the blanks for me?

3) And finally, the weather overall? I see the complaints of hot summers...no surprise that its hot, but I'm wondering if anyone who's used to it could advise. We travel in the Southwest every summer and its easily in the 100's some days, but the humidity is low so if you learn to be active early in the day and in the evenings then you're fine. How does this compare to Austin? Is the humidity high and sweltering? In Cincinnati summers, the temp might read 65-70 in the evening...sounds nice. However, the humidity is close to 90 percent and you get drenched in sweat and end up feeling gross after going for a casual walk.

I really appreciate any realistic info on these topics that someone can offer. I'm a high school teacher and my wife is making a career change to personal training from corporate America, so we're not rich. I'm also a musician and would love to be in a place with a more thriving live band scene. I've all but given up on doing anything other than being in a cover band for as long as we're here. Austin sounds like a good fit on these fronts.

We're looking to move from Cincinnati within the next year to 2 years.
