I am said to reveal this to you, but Austin's job market is not nearly as robust as web sites like this, Kiplinger's, or Forbes would have you believe. The unfortunate reality is that there is a glut of applicants from the area who strut in with their UT Austin diplomas and are pleased as punch to take jobs for $8-10 an hour with no benefits because they think Austin is so "cool". Bear in mind that these same jobs would probably pay double the salary in other states. If you come from Merkel or Tye, Texas then sure, Austin is "cool", but otherwise, it is overrated beyond belief. I have lived here long enough to recognize that. Too long.
You will not find a job with the type of remuneration you believe you deserve. You were more than likely competing with people with PhDs for your customer service job. You should feel grateful. I have been searching for work for nearly two years with nothing, not one thing, to show the the effort. I'm not nearly as credentialed as you, but I am not a slouch, I'm a hard worker, but am not getting any type of chance to prove what I am made of. Austin's job market is exasperatingly nepotistic and will only disappoint you.
I don't believe in God so I won't advise prayer. I would advise that you save and wait for the market to turn around. Once it does, make a move for a place which will pay you more and provide you more professional opportunities. Austin is limited, provincial, and not nearly as diversified (in terms of its economy) as it proclaims itself to be.
