Review of Austin, Texas

Please tell me where all the jobs are...
Star Rating - 11/21/2010
I have lived in Austin for almost 3 years and have YET to find a decent job. I listened to the reports about how great the Texas job market was so I took the leap of faith and made my way to Austin. I have an MBA and working on a PhD and cannot find a decent job. At this current time I am working as a customer service rep. I am very grateful for having a job but... I am still seeking a slice of the apple pie that was talked about so highly!

Can anyone tell me where the jobs are???

Sometimes we take a leap of faith based on our own understanding. It may not have been meant for you to go to Austin. I would suggest you pray about the situation and ask God to lead you. I wish you the best!

I have a fabulous home-based business that is booming! It is not MLM and I mentor 2-4 people a year to a 6 figure income within 3 years. It is not a get rich quick scheme and the nice thing is that I am thinking about moving somewhere warm and the best part is ...the business goes with me. I would be happy to interview anyone who is interested. This is something that I've been doing for 13 years. I retired from teaching and have a huge passion to help others. I know all about looking for that slice of "apple pie" and I found it and now share it with others. Email me and we can talk!

Contrary to the last reply, not all of the people in Austin who currently hold jobs are entitled UT grads willing to work for criminally low wages because they think Austin is "cool". What a bitter, lazy, insulting and uninformed comment. I'm sorry you can't find a job, but is it possible YOU'RE doing something wrong? And goodness, if you can't find the job you want after two years, leave Austin! Go to DFW!

I am said to reveal this to you, but Austin's job market is not nearly as robust as web sites like this, Kiplinger's, or Forbes would have you believe. The unfortunate reality is that there is a glut of applicants from the area who strut in with their UT Austin diplomas and are pleased as punch to take jobs for $8-10 an hour with no benefits because they think Austin is so "cool". Bear in mind that these same jobs would probably pay double the salary in other states. If you come from Merkel or Tye, Texas then sure, Austin is "cool", but otherwise, it is overrated beyond belief. I have lived here long enough to recognize that. Too long. You will not find a job with the type of remuneration you believe you deserve. You were more than likely competing with people with PhDs for your customer service job. You should feel grateful. I have been searching for work for nearly two years with nothing, not one thing, to show the the effort. I'm not nearly as credentialed as you, but I am not a slouch, I'm a hard worker, but am not getting any type of chance to prove what I am made of. Austin's job market is exasperatingly nepotistic and will only disappoint you. I don't believe in God so I won't advise prayer. I would advise that you save and wait for the market to turn around. Once it does, make a move for a place which will pay you more and provide you more professional opportunities. Austin is limited, provincial, and not nearly as diversified (in terms of its economy) as it proclaims itself to be.
