This is a reply to the person moving from Chicago to Austin or Houston.
Stay away from northeast/rundburg area, east, southeast...pretty much anything east of IH-35 in the Austin city limits and you should be fine. There isn't much crime here, but those are the areas where a majority of it takes place.
The northern suburbs of Pflugerville, Round Rock, Cedar Park, Hutto, and Georgetown are nice places with good schools. West and southwest Austin are very scenic and nice, but expensive and far away from most jobs unless you work downtown. Most jobs are in the northern part of the city. Traffic is only bad during the morning and afterwork rush hours. They've opened a few toll roads that have helped traffic a little, but it still gets bad on 35.
The best thing about Austin is that it's a major city but it's still sort of small in size. You can get to most places in 20 or less when traffic isn't bad.
