In Response to Conservative Couple Moving to Austi

Austin is just as liberal as Portland, only it's more militant because it's a speck of liberal blue in a sea of conservative red. You might want to reconsider Dallas, as it is much more conservative than Austin. Dallas isn't a bad city for its size, and it is principally conservative and Baptist.
I myself sit politely on the other side of the fence from you. I am a gay liberal, and Austin is so tolerant and accepting that gays don't have to huddle together in one neighborhood. There is no predominantly gay neighborhood (Austin has to be the biggest city in the US without a predominantly gay neighborhood). We are literally everywhere in Austin.
Like I said, Dallas is a nice conservative place to live. It's known for its shopping and restaurants, and thanks to DFW airport, you can fly non-stop almost anywhere in the world.
Good luck finding the right place. Austin will not give you the wide berth you are looking for, and Dallas is a much less personal city...so in Dallas, you'll be less affected by your neighbors politics, regardless of their political stripe.
