Cold, greedy, heartless selfish people?

Is it just the people I have known all my life or is it the area? I was in this area of the country all my youth, and the people are true grit country types: suspicious of others--especially Yankees--because, after all, we are still fighting the Civil War down there; cold and heartless; greedy and grasping. The land is pretty and green, but the ambiance ain't there kids. I feel sorry for anyone raised there cause their view of humanity is surely twisted.
