It's really not that bad....

I have lived in the metro Detroit area all of my life. While I agree that it is not the most pleasant place to live (specifically areas near downtown), there are definitely some really cool things to see and do here. The northern suburbs, such as Birmingham, Royal Oak, Troy, etc., are extremely wealthy and nice. You would not believe you were anywhere near Detroit if you were in these places, and yet they are only 1/2 hour drive from downtown Detroit. Oakland County is the 3rd richest county in the U.S. Also, there are many cultural activites in Detroit if you look. I would definitely recommend avoiding the downtown area in its entirety if you can, but try not to push the image of Detroit onto the neighboring suburbs. They really aren't that bad - why else would so many huge public companies plant their headquarters here?
