Overall it's a good place to live

I've lived in Hyattsville for 3 years now and although it has its pros and cons, overall it is a nice place to live. It is an up-and-coming town. Not only is it right on the DC border and has two convenient metro stops, but it also has a cute art district where there is a nice and artsy brunch spot, local coffee roastery, several art galleries, and new apartments.
Where I live there is plenty of convenience- a mall (complete with Amazon locker!), 2 gyms, a movie theater, and several good restaurants. Hop on the metro and you are in DC in a few stops.
The town can be ghetto, especially in certain areas, particularly West Hyattsville- that's where many of the assaults happen. The crowd that frequents the metro during off-peak hours is not the best of the bunch. However, Hyattsville also has its secrets. Like the nice, high-income homes of folks who work at the University of Maryland, or the cute, modestly-priced suburban community tucked behind the art district. The new apartments also attract young urban professionals.
At this moment Hyattsville is no Takoma Park or Silver Spring or Columbia Heights, but I believe it's on the upswing and it is a decent place to live especially if you want to save money.
