The Little Apple is a Nice Community

We are a military family and moving place to place we see lots of different communities. Weather is definitely not extremes here. Alaska -60 to +90, 159" snow our first year; Mojave desert 120+ for months (don't expect anything under 90 from May to Oct). Can get to 0 in winter. Dry, dry, dry. There are still things to like of both locales. Same with Manhattan. College community (about 50% of the population) keeps it more cosmopolitan than like sized 'in the sticks' places without. The University brings in some cultural events. Low crime. A couple rails-to-trails walking trails, 1 hour from U of Kansas and 2 from Kansas City MO entertainments. Yes, for the college kids drinking, unfortunately is a preoccupation as in other places. A clean town, not the vast variety in food, but more options then other places I've lived. The Supper Club (Harvey's? Harry's?) is fabulous, there are several Chinese and Mexican, some eclectic in the college town area (as well as a wonderful coffee/lunch/pastry shop), and the BEST homemade-fresh Italian I have ever had is there at Marco Polos. Also the best wine store-everything from cheap boxed wine to hundreds of $$ a bottle, they'll custom order, help you find what you need. There are martial artists, cute boutiques, a ton of massage therapists. I'm a snow lover and the snow here is marginal. Few inches and it's gone in days. The humidity is what bothers me. Yup, KS has the most Category 5 tornadoes but the Flint Hills area gets fewer and I had a much worse time of it in Killeen, TX (To say nothing of a 5" ice storm and 90 degrees in the same January). Friendly community, cute farmers market. Yes, not an exciting place for teens and 20 somethings looking for adventure but a nice community to raise kids, have some city amenities without big city hassles.
