Seriously research before moving to Memphis

If you are considering moving to Memphis, please give it serious thought first. Research extensively, so you know what you are getting in to. Positives:lovely place to visit, much to see and do, beautiful sunsets, low cost of living, housing is very cheap. You get a lot for your money. Decent weather, while it does get hot, it's not as humid as other places I've lived in. Winters are decent, it gets cold, but it doesn't last long. The food is great. I've made some pretty good friends here. Negatives: Crime, truly the worst I've ever seen. Almost a murder a day (o.k every other day), and I've lived all over the US - including big cities like Los Angelos, CA. Gang violence, house break-in's, car theft, etc. Political scene is pretty bad, corrupt, etc. Clearly visible divided reacial lines. The school system is the worst I've ever seen. I would recommend private school, but even then you pay for an education that you would receive in most public schools in other states. If your single I guess it's o.k, but if you are female, the quality of men here is not that great. If you have children, well like I said, research, research, research. My family and I have lived here for almost 4 yrs, at first we just thought we needed to give it time, get use to it. We still dislike it very much. Why do we stay??? Good question, I guess it is mostly our jobs. My husband works for major company here and I work for a world wide known hospital. We both absolutely LOVE our jobs and that is definitely a plus. I don't know how long this will keep us here though. If you are still considering moving here, I would move to the suburbs. Germantown, Collierville are nice, but a bit pricey. Cordova is still an o.k. area, but I dont know how long that will last. Arlington, Bartlett or Lakeland are also nice.
