When will the city fathers wake up?

It's sad when my colleagues tell me "don't park there" and it's only 2 blocks from the building. They say, "you'll get mugged or worse". It's no idle fear - there have been documented instances among us.
We work downtown at the University. We're stuck here. The University is not about to move.
It's so unsafe that I'm afraid to work after dark. I can't be safe walking to my car even a block from work.
The buildings must remain locked at all times in order to prevent us from being attacked at our workplace.
This is UNBELIEVABLE, UNCONSCIONABLE, and just TOTALLY RIDICULOUS.
If the city of Memphis wanted, really wanted, to do something about this, they could, and would.
Forget all the OTHER problems - racism, poor quality of education, really bad city services, terrible infrastructure.
We just want to be safe in our beds and at our workplaces.
When will the city fathers awake to the terrible ongoing situation and get real about it?
This city has always had so much POTENTIAL, but at this rate it will NEVER BE REALIZED.
It's pitiful the attempts of a few well-meaning people to put things right when the WILL to do it by the city gov'm't is just not THERE.
I don't live in Memphis due to the crime, but must work here. That alone should tell you something.
Dr. MLK Jr. is my ALL TIME hero. I believe in his dream. I felt a momentous sense of history on election day casting my vote with so many others who elected our first African American President. I felt Dr. King would have been so proud to see this day.
But this city.......is doomed.......as long as we suffer from the constant twin scourges of crime and poverty - they go hand in hand.
No hand outs! We want to work and are proud to. Let us do so in safety and security, give us the police protection we need and deserve!
I've visited many 1st rate cities - Toronto, Minneapolis, New York, and some smaller ones with great quality of living like Burlington, Vermont.
I can say unreservedly Memphis is the worst place I've ever lived with respect to crime, and that underpins ALL other aspects of quality of life.
Sorry, Memphis but you have to do better than this.
