NYC is like anywhere else, it has it's positives and negative. I think everyone should experience NYC in some form or another, that being said I think native NY'ers need to experience something other than NYC too, especially the natives that have never been as far as the public transit system can take them.
I like the shopping mostly and the anonymity you have while there mostly. Somebody mentioned migrants complaining when coming to NYC, you haven't heard complaining until you've heard a native NY'er who happens to get outside of NYC.
Nothing new.
